SEGRAVE’S RECORD
KNIGHTHOOD CAUSES SATISFACTION A BROADCAST MESSAGE (Brilish Official Wireless.) v Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. HUG BY, April 14. (Received April 15, at 11.30 a.iu.) The announcement that the King has approved of a knighthood lor Major Henry Sjograve has given great satisfaction. Major Segravc’s mother was one of the first to greet him and his wife on going ashore. Major Scgrave broadcast a short wireless message, relayed from his hotel. He mentioned that his car was in as good condition after its record-breaking feat as it was before, and he paid a warm tribute to its designer, Captain Irving, and the wonderful team of British mechanics who accompanied him to America. Major Segravo said he had no personal interest in which particular British motorist hold the world’s record, whether it was Captain Campbell, himself, or somebody else. His sole desire was to see it held by Great Britain. His ambition that Britain should secure the flying, motor boat, and motor car speed records had now been achieved. He believed that his land speed record would stand for some time.
Regarding llie motor boat race, 1m mentioned that the maximum speed attained by ins boat was eighty-eight miles per hour, which was very last on water, and all the more creditable to the designer when it was considered that the engine was of 900 horse power against the American boat’s twin engines of 2,300 horse power. BRITISH PROWESS. ON SEA, LAND, AND Alll. RUGBY, April It. (Received April 15, at 11.30 a.m.) Dr Hacking (Minister for Overseas Trade), in a speech of welcome, to Major Segrave, mentioned that in the British Pavilion of the Milan Exhibition, the model lent by Major Segrave of the Golden Arrow would be alongside the model of the Mauretania, which holds the speed record lor liners, and of the seaplane which won the Schneider Cup—indications of British prowess on sea, land, and air. Major Segrave, replying, warmly praised the designer and the engineers responsible for his ear and boat, who, he said, had alone made his success possible.
