SPEED FROM TWO SOURCES

MOTOR CYCLES AND WHIPPETS FLOOD RELIEF SPORTS AT FORBURY Fully three thousand people enjoyed dirt track motor cycle racing, whippet racing, and glorious sunshine at Forhury Fark on Saturday afternoon. And since this combined meeting' was arranged solely in aid of the mayor’s Hood .relief fund the good attendance was very satisfactory from every point of view About £'l67 Us 6d was taken at, the gates, and owing to the generosity of the bodies concerned very little has to come out of this total lor expenses. The band of the Fourth Otago Regiment was in attendance. Although no prizes were awarded with the exception of Mrs Maxwell’s medal in the open scratch race lor motor cyclists, and a motor cycle tyre (Mr Quirk), and a medal in the consolation race, the competitors showed admirable sporting spirit by treating the various events with the utmost keenness. The whippets provided some real good fun, and as usual the motor cyclists added an abundance of thrills to tho _ gathering. Any spills which were sustained wore of a minor nature. R. if. Stewart was the most consistent and the most successful rider of the day, for in the Ocean Roach Handicap and the open scratch race, both of which ho won by fair margins after leading all the way, he rode with commendable judgment. Bishop, Grounds, Xapier, and James Nisbct also rode well. 11l luck dogged that brilliant and popular rider, A. f). Inglis, all the afternoon. When riding an Ariel in the earlier races ho had trouble through Jus petrol pipe and carburettor block- ( ing, and, although his cornering was a treat to watch, ho could make little j headway, and had to retire Then later on in the day one of his tyros came olf. and lie was again lorced to retire, avoiding a crash only by judicious handling of his machine. Bishop, too, did not have the best of luck, lor it was no fault of his that the scratch race had to be run olf a second time, lie was well in the lead, and was passing the officials at the pot, when they noticed that his back axle had gone. Accordingly they (lagged the field off. Bishop did not fall. Nobody could understand why. . The movie man, who took photographs of some til tiie competitors going full tilt, created a great deal of interest among the spectators. Mo was whirled around at a last clip in an official's car. The whippet racing was watched with appreciation, and much attention was centred upon Captain Tasman. Mr W. Quirk's New Zealand Derby winner. However, it was Mr F. Tanner's Blue Pepper which collected the honours of the day. Jn the first heat of the hurdles Fepperec.n pipped Blue Pepper by making a tremendous sprint. A similar clfort in the final just failed. The Depnly-mayor. speaking on behalf of the Flood Belief Committee, expressed deep gratitude to the motor cycle seel ion of the Dunedin Motor (lub, the Dunedin Whippet Club, the i Fnrhury Park Trotting Club, and the Fourth Regimental Band . for placing their services at the committee's disposal in connection with the sports entertainment that day. He also thanked (lie individual competitors, the officials and gatemen of Fnrhury Park for giving their services tree, and he said that 'ho felt justified in specially mentioning the names of Mr Grace (the secretary of the meeting), Mr 11. Divers (the secretary of the Whipped Racing- Club), and Mr B. Isaacs ’ for the labour j which had helped to make the gathering such a success. They wore grateful also tor the large attendance of the public. On behalf of the N-mv Zealand Whippet Association Mr Douglas then presented the New Zealand Derby ribbon, which was competed lor last .Saturday at Christchurch. Me said it was very gratifying to the Dunedin Club that one oi' its members. Mr William Quirk, should secure the honour of being the 1 first winner of flic. New Zealand Derby, with his dog Captain Tasman. On behalf of the club and of the citizens he heartily congratulated Hr Quirk. Hr Quirk suitably responded. The Rev. V. G. Bryan lying spoke, ami made an appeal on behalf of the relief fund. The officials who ran tlio meeting must, he congratulated upon the admirable way in which ibe events wore ) bandied There were no delays, and the original time-table was adhered to rigidly.
