PORT CHALMERS AFFAIRS.

TO THE EDITOR.. Sir, —I am sure the ratepayers in Port Chalmers are amused with tho letters in the Press signed “Goosey,” “Goose-step,” and “Goose Wing.” I wonder if this herd of geese know anything about the borough affairs. Presumably not, or they would rcs.yrt to some cleaner method, than mudthrowing. “Goose Wing” would like to know if the mayor's room is u>cd as a. secretary’s office. J would like to ask this goose, Did he ever ask any previous mayor through the Press what he used tho room for 7 Perhaps it did not suit him to inquire. “Goose Wing ” also suggests Air fane as a most suitable mayor on account of his business training. Surely lie knows that wc have had. several business mayors, and the borough was worse off when they left office, as every ratepayer in Port Chalmers knows. In your report of the council's last meeting f. see Cr (‘-mipbcll suggested that the Town Hail be put at the disposal of those intending to contest the election, so that they could put their views before the people; but one business councillor said we would not get anyone to speak. J would like to ask him why not. We. have a right to know their views. I am sure if any of flic present council intend to seeds re-elec-tion they will, if thev think they have done' their duty, have no hesitation in appearing before the electors. I am sure this .same councillor would like a reference concerning a person's past capabilities before employing him. so why fl’l ho oppose the motion? N'ot only is the mayor being discredited, but the mayoress is also being ignored by several members of tho “ Mothers’ League,” who prefer to address the secretary rather than the chairwoman. They seem to forget that the chair must lie respected. Wc do not expect these few to he ladylike, but they could at least Irv to he womanly. If the members ol” this goose family want to criticise, why not in a fair manner?— 1 am, etc., J’airplav. April 15.
