THE FIGHTING FISH

SOME SPECTACULAR BATTLES [Pek United Press Association.] THAMES, January 31. , Yesterday Mr _ Zane Grey’s party took four swordfish and one 'make. The fishing was most spectacular, since three boats struck fish at the same moment, and in the launch Zane Grey was on two fish were fighting at once. On this launch Romer Grey and Carney each had a fish'’on at the same time. The morning proved the most favourable for fish since the run of marlin set in. These fish were •feeding on a school of trey.alii.* Five minutes were sufficient to hook a swordie. In Carney’s case the fish jumped twenty-two times amidst the encircling launches, from which a wonderful series of movies was obtained, and also set photos unique in the history of big game angling in New Zealand. This fish went fully 50yds on its tail upright above the surface of the water. Romer Grey’s fish was not so active, but breached a number of times. At the same time the launch Waiomo, with tho Reynolds party from Hamilton, was fast to a marlin, and Zane Grey himself was also fast to a marlin, all these four swordfish being played within an area of less than an acre, breaching and fighting amongst the launches. In the Waiomo Morpeth lost his fish, but the other launches killed them, as follow:—R. Carney (launch Zano Grey, striped marlin of 3451 b; Romer Grey (same launch, simultaneously), a striped marlin of 2501 b; Zane Grey (launch Alma G.), striped marlin of*3oolb. Those three fish were landed together. Later in the day Romer Grey got fast to a mako, which he landed after a hard fight. It weighed 3001 b. Then Zane Grev got fast to a small, but hard-fighting, marlin of 2501 b, which put up the best display of the day, breaching seventeen times in amongst the launches. Captain Mitchell trolled the outer bank successfully, but attempted to gaff a hurgo turtle, which was over sft across the shell. This day’s five fish brings the total of the party’s catch to forty-seven, which includes mako and striped marlin only, not mentioning the' common sharks that have been caught.
