OLD BOYS V. COLTS

The wicket on the University Ground at Logan Park offered equal chances to batsmen and bowlers alike. When the Old Boys-Colts match was resumed, Old Boys, with eight wickets down for 234 runs from the previous Saturday, declared its innings closed, and against the attack of Alloo and Dickinson the Colts made little headway. Had it not been for Eastman, who scored 52 in brilliant fashion, the total would have been very low indeed. 'As it was, the whole side of twelve was dismissed for 122, being 112 runs behind Old Boj;s’ total. With the chance of securing a three-point win Alloo sent the Colts In again, but when stumps were drawn there was only sis down for,_ 67 Old Boys thus notching a ,two-point win. The outstanding knock for the Colts was 'undoubtedly the 52 compiled by Eastman. He played delightful cricket, and his leg shots and perfectly-timed carpet drives were a treat to watch. Except for a forceful innings by Miller in the second innings, there was not much to enthuse over in the batting. On the day Alloo and Dickinson were the most successful bowlers, taking five wickets each in the first innings and three and one respectively in the second. While the wicket, was favourable for Alloo to introduce plenty of spin, Dickinson did not find the wicket altogether to his liking, although he. bagged six wickets for 50 for the two innings. He djd not bowl at his usual pace, and still the balls were bumping frequently. Ho kept a good length, always on the wicket, and occasionally sent down a rather effective slow off-break ball. He was also conspicuous for good fielding, and with Smith were the two best fielders for Old Boys. At times Smith was brilliant, and his one-hand catch which dismissed Heenan was a splendid effort. Templeton and Rao opened the batting, but only three runs were oh when the partnership was broken. The former, after batting safely and scoring two with a nice glance ,to leg, was bowled by Dickinson. Silver was nest, and those two added 20 before Rae was given out- Ibw off Dickinson. Silver and Conradi both reached 17 before leaving - the crease. Silver , played a forceful innings, and was. bowled by Alloo. in attempting a big hit, while Conradi was caught off Dickinson after playing rather scratchily.. Eastman’s arrival at the crease resulted in some bright batting, and’.ho looked; like staying in for the, day, when he misjudged a ball from Dickinson and was caught out by Alloo. In making his 52 he scored with shots all round the wicket, ’ and at all times put plenty of -force. behind his bat. Collett hit hard for 8 not. out,, while all the other batsmen had short lives. . In the Colts’, second strike Roe batted; carefully - for 15, Conradi showed improved form in ■, collecting his IS, while Miller was; most -aggressive in scoring 23. Off one over from AllooMiller scored 15 runs, which inwluded three lovely carpet drives to the boundary and a shot to fine leg for 3. He lost his wicket .in jumping out W the last hall.of the day, sent down by Har-

iaway.
