References to the illness of Mr Walter Goiv was made hy the Rev. J. J. Cairney, who presided over the annual break-up crcmony at Columba Collegia last evening. The speaker stated that Mr Gow interested himself keenly in school activities, and always showed that ho was willing to do all that lay within his powe, on behalf of the college. It was decided that an expression of sympathy with Mr Gow be forwarded to him. Mr Thomas Begg, of Bayfield, who died yesterday, alter a brief illness, at the age of seventy-three, was a sturdy and unassuming New Zealander who played a manful part in fife, giving a deal of Ids thought and time to the service of his fellows. Born at Anderson’s Bay, the sixth son of Mr Adam Begg, who settled there in 1848, ho was in the first batch of scholars at the Anderson’s Bay School, and early in his career lie opened the first quarry in that district. _ Subsequently he became a partner in the firm of Messrs Haxton, Beattie, and Begg—later Messrs Begg and Wilkinson—which ultimately became incorporated 'as the New Zealand Engineering Company, a well-known firm in the ’eighties. Ho served for a long time on the Peninsula Road Board, and was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church, also superintendent on the Sunday School. On one occasion he stood for Parliament and made a good fight with Mr N. J. M. Larnach for the Peninsula scat, Mrs Begg, wdio was a sislei cf Dr Andrew Cameron, survives her husband, and the family consists of Miss Margaret Begg’s five sons—Mi Charles Begg (engineer, of Glasgow), Dt Andrew Begg (at present in London, engaged in cancer research), J)r Araina Begg (of Pukekohe), Mr William Begg (mining engineer, of Johannesburg), and Mr James Begg (who resides at the home of his parents).
