PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The vacation ceremony took place this afternoon. The principal (Air C. AI. Gilray) reported that the roll remained the same as in 1927, but there had been an increase in hoarders, of whom there were 57, This number had been maintained throughout the year. The health of the hoys had, on the whole, been good. Airs Baigent, the now matron, who took up her duties in January, had proved herself very capable. Air Buxton, the now assistant in the lower school, had done very good work in the class room, and had proved himself a good teacher. Ho had also had charge of the swimming class, had conducted it capably, and had taken his share in the control of the games. Air At'Clymont, who joined the staff in 1927, was leaving at the end of this year to take up a position on the Otago Boys’ High School staff. Ho had been a capable teacher, and a very enthusiastic coach in cricket and football. Air J. At. Simmers, who had, for over three years, been responsible' for the bulk of the mathematics and all the science teaching, also was leaving at the end of the year. His long experience and thorough methods Had proved of great value, and ho had done much to improve the standard of work in the secondary school. Air J. A. Dunning, who left in 1925 to proceed to Oxford, was returning to the college in February, and should, after his experiences abrad, make a very strong member of the staff. Aliss Gloss had again had charge of the pupils learning the piano, and, thanks to her enthusiasm, most of them had made good progress. The usual classes in carpentry (Air Slemint), wool-classing (Air Al'Grcgor), boxing (Mr Oxley), and dancing (Aliss Wallace) had been held. The carpentry class had done especially good work this year, and the annual display would he one of the best they had had. One boy (A. 11. Malcolm) had gained a credit pass, and therefore a University bursary in the junior University examination. Higher leaving certificates were awarded last year to the three boys who were elegihle. Nine hoys passed matriculation, and of these four boys in their third year gained M.S.P. passes, two AI.S. passes, and three passed in matriculation simply. 13. M. Elder gained the scholarship qualification with the highest total for the Otago education district; four other hoys gained senior free place qualification by examination. The whole of Standard VI. was again presented for ex and nation; seven gained proficiency certificates, and two secured competency, After dealing with special branches of scholastic life, and also with college activities and sport, the report referred to the death of Aliss Margaret' Sim Cotton Al'Glashan, the last surviving member of the family of the late John Al'Glashan, and a co-founder of the college. In conclusion, the principal expressed his gratitude to the donors of special prizes and gifts, and to all who, by the kindly assistance which they had given, had proved the interest that was taken in the institution.
