LAWRENCE, November 12.

The monthly meeting of the Tuapek County Council was held hero on Friday afternoon. A letter was received from the secretary of the Waitahuna Cinnabar Syndicate stating that work had been resumed at the mine, and asking that tho road be put in order.—lt was resolved to allow the syndicate one man’s wages for three days. Tho Chairman of No, 17 District Highways Council asked for information as to tho steps the Tnapcka County Council had taken to enforce the motor lorry regulations.—Reply to be forwarded that tho council had no check on the weight of loads. It was resolved to write to tho District Highways Council for assistance in carrying out flood protection works at Island Block. The Secretary of the Otago Harbour Board wrote asking for tho support of tho council in its efforts to have a coastal survey carried out.— Received. Eight applications were leceivcd for the appointment of comity engineer. Tho number was eventually cut down to three, and it was resolved that tho clerk write to each applicant for an interview with tho members of tho council at a special meeting on Friday next, when the appointment will probably bo made. At the annual meeting of tho Beaumont Racing Club tho secretary presented a. statement showing that the receipts from all sources lor the past year amounted to £2,783 14s Id (inclusive of £2Ol 11s 3d brought forward), tho chief items being: Nominations and acceptances £231 Is, gate £4ll 15s, totalisator £1,441 14s 9cl, and members’ subscriptions £7O 10s. The expenditure totalled £2,069 11s Bd, of which the main items wore: Stakes £901; Government taxes £853 11s 6d, improvements to buildings and course £2OB, fixed deposit £250, and salaries £lO3 7s. The credit balance on tho year’s operations showed a total of £ll4 2s sd, which, everything _ considered, was regarded as very satisfactory.

Messrs Brcnnscll and Browno Bros, aro pushing forward with vigour their carrying contract for tho Dunedin City Corporation between Lawrence and Waipori Falls. They have four big horse teams at work as well as tour motor lorries, which means the removal of considerable tonnage at the end of each week. There is no end yet to tho quantity of material awaiting delivery. There is every prospect of a big fruit harvest in Central Otago this coming season. The orchards in tho Teviofc district arc showing up nicely, and growers are very hopeful. The steps taken in the early spring to combat the brown rot trouble give indications of good results.
