ST. HILDA CLUB Tho annual meeting of the St, Kilda Lawn Tennis Club was held last evening in the Bungalow Tea Rooms. There was a fairly large attendance of lady and gentlemen members, and Mr H. Chapman occupied tho chair. The Chairman, in moving tho adoption of the annual report and balancesheet, said that the club had to be congratulated upon the success of the past season. Mr Allan had reported that the club’s name had not been emblazoned on the banner since 1910, but the banner boro the club’s name for 1927-28, and he hoped that it would again appear for 1928-29 The report made no reference to the work done by some persons, he supposed through modesty. In his experience the secretary was the person who did most ol the work, and ho thought that they should recognise the work done by Mr Allan. (Applause.) The financial position of tho club was not so good as it was tho year previously. Tho credit balance last year had been £7O; this year it was £4O, but that was accounted for by tho erection of a fence costing £SO, which was money well spent. The motion was seconded by Mr J. J. Trcgcar, who said that it had been a strenuous year’s work for the officials, who had carried out their duties in a capable and expeditious manner. The motion was carried.
Tho following office-bearers wore elected:—President, Mr J. J. Marlow; vice-presidents—Messrs H. Chapman, W. Dawe, J. J Tregear, A. Harris, R. W. Hall, and Dr Allan; joint secretaries and treasurers, Messrs J. H. Chapman and J. Y. Allan; sole selector, Mr J. Y. Allan; committee— Misses Miller, Smith, Scott, Strut hers, Messrs B. Wingfield, N. E. Dawe, W. Patrick, and J. B. Deaker; auditor, Mr J. J. Tregear; delegates to the Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs J. Y. Allan and Chapman Mr Tregear brought up a scheme for raising £4,000 with which to lay down courts at Logan P,ark. He said that the money was urgently reouired to forward the game. There was _a great scarcity of courts in Dunedin, and those requiring practice were unable to get it. Ho asked for the support of members in the direction of making contributions or lending money to tho association, which would receive anything up to £5 or multiples of £5. It would not be beyond the possibility of many to put in a few pounds. About £2.0*00 had been promised or paid in. Tho security was quite good. They all know that tho courts were crowded on Saturdays. The Chairman remarked that 6 per cent, interest was reasonable. It was decided to open tho season on September 1 It was also resolved to recommend the committee to enter two B grade teams for tho competition. It was decided to forward a letter to the town clerk, St. Kilda, thanking the borough council for the way it had supported the Summer Time Bill. FRANCE BEATEN IH DOUBLES Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MONTREAL, August 21. At Newport Australia and America teamed well, and in the afternoon eliminated Franco from the doubles. Hawkes and Washburn, tho former doubles champion ol America, defeated Paul and Claud Dericou, 6-0, 6-2. Tho game could scarcely bo termed a contest. Hawkes readily acquainted himself with tho grass courts, and this was tho principal factor in tho match. His cannonball service and backhand njsscourt shots wore particularly ira-px-essive.—Australian Press Association.
