ELECTRICAL SUPPLY
INCREASED POWER PLANT WANTED Tho Electric Light and Power Committee of the City Council reports that the steady increase in the rate oi growth of the load at tho power station, with a prospect of a still further increase in the future, has necessitated the department looking into the question of making provision for increased power plant during the year 1930, by which time it is estimated that further generator plant, over and above that now on order, will bo required. At the present time it would appear that the most attractive pro-posal-is the provision of tho suggested No. 3 power station on the river below tho existing main station. With a view, therefore, to getting accurate data of this scheme, the city engineer has been given instructions to make » complete survey thereof, and submit his report to tho committee at tiro earliest convenient date. The Committee also reports that a communication lias been received troin the Otago Labour Representation Committee requesting that the council take immediate steps to have tho installation of electricity carried out direct by the City Council. The committee is of tho opinion that, apart irom the merits or otherwise of the proposal, the time is inopportune for the' council to embark in such a scheme. \ cry good facilities are provided tho public Jor wiring their houses and purchasing fittings by means of tho department’s system of advances, and as there are over fifty licensed wiremen contracting for the wiring and installation business, consumers arc getting the benefit. of keen competition, in the committee’s view the present paramount duty of the department is to concentrate on the provision of a supply of power sufficient for all needs, with reasonable spare plant.
