JUMP IN RATES
COHSTERIIATOH ill WELUKGTOK EFFECT OF UNIMPROVED VALUE BATIN6 [Pkb United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 20. The City Council has just issued the annual rate notices, and general consternation is expressed at the manner in which they have jumped up, ns much as £7 or more on properties of moderate value. The Mayor explained that this is the result of the recent poll, when it was decided that all rating should be on unimproved value. The result is that central city holdings have to pay more, while suburban properties pay less. The council only receives the same amount as before, and lias not raised the rates.
The Mayor points out that Wanganui recently found it necessary to revert to rating on annual value, and ho considers that this is fairer, ns the owners of expensive buildings now escape too lightly. “It would not surprise me,” ho says, “to find the ratepayers reversing the decision of Ipst year.”
