July ] The. .labour market: among tlio;boyb ia ; Christchurch has nob ' improved since the beginning ef, tho year,- and many.boys havo yet to be placed in work. On its books the Y.M.C.A. has several hundreds of boys waiting ; for, jobs, both' private and publico; The employers are not in u position at present to take boys, on, and tho result is that every advertisement for a boy is answered - by ■ a largo and eager queue. The Government department cannot find sufficient positions for boys at present among private employers. For the -most' part the trades cannot tako -apprentices, as many of the quotas are full.- - llus is particularly so _ with regard _to plumbing. The- painting -apprenticeship quota is not full,-but the employers are unwilling to take-on apprentices because of the high rates of wages wanted. Engineering andjeldetrical work cannot absorb very inany boys at present. In filet,, under the present conditions bl apprenticeship the employers find it hard to give much' work to boys at all. The result it that there 'are hundreds- out of work.
