ST. KILDA AND CITY STREETS.
TO TUl'i EBITOU. Sir, —There has been a good dcul of correspondence in your paper about St. Kilda streets and the advisability of joining the city. After looking over the streets I non Id advise the ratepayers to have a little more patience, as the council is on the right lines. The streets and paths are all under construction, and in a little time their borough will bo the very best and prettiest in Otago. It would be madness to join the city, for the simple reason that tho city docs not look' after the outside districts, hut is more concerned with building Town Halls, buying up tho Arcade, and with the main city streets. Tho roads of the city, except the main streets, are the worst in New Zealand. I saw to-day little children going homo from school who were compelled to paddle through water and mud owing to having only a clay footpath with a few sTcenings. 1 am referring to Corstorphine road, Caversham, where people have been paying rates for years and have not got.ovcn a footpath. It has been known that ladies have had to tic their shoes on in ease of losing them in tho mud and clay. Wo arc paying tens of thousands for asphalt roads for motorists, and we cannot give a decent footpath for the children to walk on. It is a perfect disgrace that little children have to walk througli mud and water and stay in school with wot feet. There arc other places needing just ns much tention, but it seems our worthy councillors do not care so long as the streets and paths leading to their own homes and business aro all right. My advice to St. Kilda ratepayers is; Stick to your borough and keep away from our selfish city brothers. And to the city councillors: Do your duty and provide at least asphalt footpaths for those districts which you beguiled into your web with rosy promises.—l am, etc., For. the CiunmiEN. 31 ay 2,
