CAPTAIN’S DILEMMA

SHIP SAVED FROM DISASTER (British Official News.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, April L 5. (Received April IG, at noon.) A grave disaster was narrowly averted owing to the presence of mind and coolness of the captain of the Canadian Pacific liner Montrose. The captain was laced with the alternative of .steaming between large icebergs, with the possibility of their ripping open the sides of his vessel, or of meeting smaller bergs in an almost head-on collision. He chose the latter course, and those on hoard believe that the wreck of the Montrose, under conditions similar to those in which the Titanic met her fate, was thereby prevented. SHIP’S PERILOUS POSITION PERIOD OF UNCERTAINTY LONDON, April 15. (Received April 16, at 12.30 p.m.) “The Montrose was steaming slowly when a huge double iceberg loomed in the fog. It towered above the ships masts,” said a passenger. “Captain Lundy had to decide whether to go between the two parts ol the iceberg and risk the ship’s sides being ripped open or to go direct for one ot the bergs. Without hesitation he took the latter course. Ihe ship quivered and rocked ominously. “ Wireless messages were sent out, and the passengers went quietly to their stations. The captain slowly backed the ship, and within thirty minutes the passengers were informed that there was no immediate danger, and they could discard the lifebelts. “ Before disembarking the passengers assembled on the upper deck and cheered the captain.”—United Service.
