OBSTETRICAL TRAINING

HOSPITAL IN CONNECTION WITH MEDICAL SCHOOL SUGGESTED [Special to thb ‘Stab.’] AUCKLAND, April 11. Under the caption of “ Weakness in Medical- Training,” the Auckland 'Star ’ in its editorial columns states: — “ An agitation for the improvement of obstetrical training in New Zealand has been going on for seven years, but probably the recent visit of a great English specialist has done mors than anything else to help the movement along. The medical delegate of the National Council of Women, who has returned from a visit to Sydney, where she has spent some time investigating the methods of teaching obstetrics in that city, advises the establishment of a Chair of Obstetrics in Otago in which she follows Dr Victor Bouncy, There is already a Professor of Midwifery and Diseases of Women there, assisted by two tutors, and it is not quite clear to the layman what difference the establishment of a 1 Chair of Obstetrics’ at Dunedin would make, though it is obvious that a maternity hospital conducted in connection with the school ivould be of great benefit. Possibly to sot up a maternity hospital, fully equipped and freely .attended with the best staff procurable, at or near the university, would do more for the benefit of patients and doctors than multiplying professors, where there are already three men engaged in the special subjects required. At any rate, there seems to be general agreement that New Zealand lags behind some other countries in midwifery training.”
