ENCROACHMENT OF HEDGES.

TO TUB EDITOK. Sir,—A letter appeared in tire ‘Star ’ recently anent the illegal encroachment of hedges on to the footpaths in various parts of the city, hut especially at St. Clair, from one end to the other. 1 certninly did expect ihut the offendeis in this respect -would have been ordered to remove these intolerable nuisances, but no, they still exist; and the one f referred to as having been recentlv partially clipped is still left to be a "pest to everyone using tha t footpath. ft is all the more palpable because the properties all around are enclosed with expensive and elegant fences or ornamental brick walls. Again 1 ask, Why are these offenders permitted to set the city by-laws at defiance in this way? 1 have no personal bias against these people. Jt is beeaused .1 insist that laws must be obeyed by everyone; otherwise why make those laws. Personally, feeling as J do about this matter. I would consider myself a pest and a most undesirable citizen if I allowed myself- to offend in the manner I complain of. And I am not alone in this. Everyone who has to walk along these paths complains frequently at having to rub against the hedges or walk Chinaman fashion. Again, why, oh why, does the controller of this city not insist on tiie indiscriminate obedience to all bis bylaws and realise that what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander?—l am. etc., Hedgehog. February 20.
