VICE-REGAL VISIT

The Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) and Lady Alice Fergusson arrived by the first express from the north yesterday on a hort unofficial visit, before making a tour of Southland. His Excellency has no public engagements during his stay, but this afternoon Lady Alice gave an address on the alms and work of the League of Mothers, a branch of which she instituted in Dunedin on her last visit. On their arrival Their Excellencies were met by the mayor (Mr W. B. Taverner) and mayoress. They are staying at the Hotel Carlton. This morning Their Excellencies, accompanied the mayor and mayoress on a drive round the city. A short break was made at the Ross Home, Northeast Valiev, which Sir Charles has previously visited. Shortly after his arrival in the dominion His Excellency laid the foundation stone of the hospital block at the home, and the inmates treasure pleanant memories of his chats -with them.

Sir Charles Statham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, left for Wellington on Parliamentary business by the second express to-day. News received by the last mail from the East states that Mr H. Downie, formerly of South Dunedin, died on board the steamer Mahidol, on November 15 last. Mr Downie was manager of the Satupulo No Liability Tin Company, Takuapa, Siam, and was on his way to Penang for treatment for malaria. The late Mr Downie was educated at the Forbury School, and was apprenticed to Messrs J. Sparrow and Sons, engineers, Dunedin. He assisted in the construction of tho long est bridge on the Central Otago line, and also' in placing several dredges on the river at Alexandra. He was sub" eequently chief dredgemastcr on several of them. Ho also took over to Australia several dredges for erection. The deceased was later dredgemaster of the tin mines in Tasmania, and from there went to the blast, whore ho was employed in tin dredging just prior to his death. The deceased’s father. Alnrray, manager for the Vacuum Oil Company Proprietary, Ltd., in Otago and Southland, has been promoted to the position of general manager for Western Australia. Air and Mrs Alnrray and family will leave Wellington-by the Alararnn on the 201 h inst. eu rout© to Perth. Miss Styles, fashion buyer in London, of tho D.T.C., arrived by the first express to-day. New guests at the Grand Hotel include Airs R. Wnlbridge and Misses A. H. Parke and Jordan (Honolulu), Air S. APXavish (Melbourne), Alessrs W. P. and Guy Maschwitz; (Killarn, New South Wales), Alessrs IT. A. Beauchamp, Thos. Black, T. A. Black, inn., Airs Daniels, and Major N. Nash (Wellington,), Air and Airs W. S. Smart and Air A. S. Slmtc (Timaru). Recent arrivals to tho Excelsior Hotel include the lion. Air and Airs J. S. Kennard (New A T nrk), Airs A. Crawford, Miss J. A. B-idgway (Adelaide), Mr and Airs H. Targe (Napier), Alessrs C. C. Davis, E. Bradshaw, T, Britten and Aliss Britten (Christchurch). Air A. Richards (Timaru), and Airs Herbert (Stewart Island).
