In the game in which Benefield was Lea ten by Scott, the latter led 12-2 on the twelfth head, but the former rapidly gained ground, and the score was 14-13 against him on the nineteenth. Scott gained » pair on the twentieth and Won. Benefield took the lead for the start In bis game with Best, and increased it steadily to the twentieth head, when Best abandoned the struggle. Higginson had a close contest with Raphael. Although ho led 17-6 at the tenth, Raphael climbed to 12, but did not score for four heads, and was still ;4 behind at the nineteenth. Higginson reached 21 on the eighteenth, and did not add a point thereafter, Raphael scoring a single, which brought him to 20 on the final head. Three well-known players who were eliminated were Harraway (Dunedin), iWalker (Ponsonby), and Carswell (Taieri). Harraway was beaten by the Masterton player Kerr, 16-11, in the ninth round; Walker being beaten by Smellie (Green Island) in the, same round, 18-13. Carswell, who won the singles championship in 1924, was beaten bv J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay) in the eighth round by 1 point, the scores being 18-17. Last year’s singles champion, H. Clarke (Rocky Nook), and now of Carlton, had no difficulty in 'disposing of F. Smith (Kaituna) in the sixth round, having a lead of 12 sit the final head. His form was not nearly so good against Tyrrell in the fallowing round, ho suffering defeat by the remarkable margin of 17 points. He recovered in the eighth round to defeat Smellie (Dunedin), 24-12, and scored another victory hy beating Wooller (Remuera), 20-15 in the ninth round. There was a sensational finish between Haworth and Lomas. Haworth was 7 up with two heads to go, and Lomas was 3 down at the twentieth head, still requiring 4at the last head. These he secured, and beat Haworth by one shot on an extra head. The elimination of Carswell, the wellknown Taieri player, will come as a surErise to a number of bowlers. Carswell ad his first win against J. Renton (St. 'Albans), but in the next game the Taieri player was beaten by J. D. Smith (Dunedin). In the following match Carswell was eliminated, being beaten by J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay). Reid established a good lead early in the game, and after twelve heads still had a margin of eight points. Carswell scored well in the remaining heads, but was beaten hy one point.
