THE GREEN ISLAND ROAD
DEPUTATION TO TAIERI COUNCIL A great deal of the Taicri County Council’s time was taken up at its monthly meeting discussing the question of the payment for the reconstruction of the main street of Green Island boron tdi. A deputation from Urn Borough Council waited on the meeting. it consisted of the mayor (Mr Kailcr), Cr Orange, the town clerk (Mr Burk), and the borough engineer (Mr Williams). Mr Kailcr (mayor) asked the council to reconsider tho letter regarding the Taiori Council’s contribution to the new works on the Green Island road. Mr Williams explained the position of tho appointment of cost between the local bodies concerned: The extra amount asked for waj about £BO. Cr Orange supported the remarks ol the engineer (Mr Williams). The Chairman replied to tho deputation that he was disappointed at their remarks. He bad thought that, being fair-minded men. they bad come out to inform him tln/t the 'warrant under which the county paid its contribution had been cancelled now that tho conditions bad so altered. Ibo more this road was improved the greater would bo the traffic across it to the county roads. These latter roads were starved at present for the upkeep of tho main motor roads. The council had paid more (ban it had first intended to do, or mo'ro than it was entitled to do under the warrant. Ho could not vote that any more money would be granted by the council, and bo felt be was sneaking for every councillor in making that statement. Ho considered that the council had‘been moro tlmn liberal. Further, when they promised the contribution first it was on the understanding that the whole road was being improved, and when it was made known that only portion of it was being done they did nut withdraw or lessen the contribution. It was high time the council was lot out of the agreement towards the annual upkeep of the road. Mr Williams spoke of the hardship under which boroughs labored. Ibo new legislation would allot. /5 per cent, of the tax to counties and only 6 per c0..t., to the Boroughs. Under this new method surelv tho county’s position would be much bettor, and encourage it to pay the £BO asked ibr. He would understake to use his best endeavors to have the whole read completed if the county paid up. Cr Scott asked if it were not, a fact that the tender for tho work accepted had been too high. Mr Williams replied that the successful tender was below his (the engineer’s) estimate. Mr Burk emphasised Green Island s hardship by stating that a tally had shown that onlv 4 per cent, of tho traffic on the Main road was local. Tho engineer stated it would pay them better to amalgamate with Dunedin. To keep the borough going on present income was almost impossible. After some further discussion between tho council and the deputation, the Chairman promised that tho council would consider the matter when the latter had retired. —Tho deputation thanked the council for the hoailiij£ given to them. After the deputation had retired the couiicil decided to adhere to the former decision. Regarding’ the 4 culvert under the Brighton road, it was resolved to ask the ratepayer concerned to clean the ditch
