TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING Cr -T. W. Blair presided at the monthly meeting of tho Taieri County Council. There was a full attendance of councillors. The Inspector of Works detailed the work of the month, and reported regarding Mr Green’s letter concerning the depositing of ashes on the road at the tileries, which had been referred to Cr Scott and tho inspector, who were to meet the persons concerned on the ground. The meeting, as arranged, took place 011 October 31. After some discussion it was agreed by Mr Hudson, 011 behalf of the Tileries Company, to remove all ashes from the roadside and to enlarge the culvert at their crossing, leaving all in good order. The Finance Committee reported having examined tho month's accounts, and recommended that these, totalling £2,103 18s 3d, bo passed for payment. The receipts for the month had been £652 13s Kid. Tho bank pass book showed a debit balance of £4,857 3s sd.—Adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported favorably on the slaughter houses in the county and on the piggeries at Green Island Bush and the boilingdown works at Burnside. During the month the health inspector and himself had visited Brighton, and inspected several insanitary matters, which had since been attended to. —Received. Tho Ranger reported having impounded 12 head of cattle and two horses during the mouth. —Received. The Public Works Department forwarded authority for £2UO, being Government grant lor Green Island to Taieri Mouth road.—Received. CORRESPONDENCE.^ The Uuder-Sccrctary and Engineer. Public Works Department, forwarded copies 7 of draft regulations under Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, for perusal and comment.—Replies to be sent disapproving of several of the suggestions and the chairman, clerk, and inspector were empowered to draw up the replies. Tho Chairman No. 17 District Highways Council forwarded:—(l) Estimates for Main Highways, 1927-28, as submitted, approved, and granted; (2) Main Highways maps corrected up to March 31, 1927; and (3) statement of motor vehicle registration up to September 30, 1927.—Received. In connection with paragraph (1) the Inspector submitted plan for proposed bridge over Wliaro Creek.—This was approved.—Cr Carvuthers asked when a. start would bo made with Shannon Crook bridge.—Tho Inspector replied that the plans would be prepared early next month. Tho Whare Creek bridge would be commenced as soon as the plans had been returned by the Public Works Department. The Clerk’, Bruce County, wrote further in regard to proposal for the formation of an Otago counties’ association.—Or Blackie moved that the proposal be proceeded with.—Cr Scott seconded.—Carried. Tho Chief Surveyor, Dunedin, forwarded plan of part of City Corporation road to Waipori power station in Taieri County, for the council’s con-' sent to road being proclaimed as a pub lie road.—Approved; plan to bo signed Telegrams were /read from Otago Motor Club and Expansion League reguarding the petrol tax, and suggested a meeting in Dunedin on tho matter. —Cr M'lntosh and tho clerk to attend the meeting. 1 The Clerk reported that a protest regarding the’.allocation of petrol tax had been .wired to Mr Dickson,-M.P.* and

Mr Sidey, M.P., on tho 18th inst. A similar telegram had been sent by the chairman of the council to tho_ same gentlemen regarding the alteration of percentage of petrol tax to bo paid as between boroughs and counties. Messrs Cook, and Cook wrote regarding tho dedication of road at Wiugatui.—Approved, consent tc the dedication of road to be signed and sealed. Tho Berwick Domain Board wrote regarding the removal of a gate on the road leading to Waipori place.—Representations to be made to the Otago Land Board. The Inspector of Noxious Weeds drew attention to the necessity of clearing broom and gorse on river bank at Taicri Ferry bridge and on sections below Allanton Cemetery.—To bo attended to. The Secretary of the Strath-Taieri A. and P. Society wrote in reply to the council’s last letter, stating that his society accepted no responsibility in the matter of providing pipes for drain on-road, and that, provision for parking cars, if necessary, should be made by the county.—Received. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote regarding roads in run 600. Sutton Survey District.—Council offers no objection. Consent on plans to be signed and sealed.' / The Rev. W. W. Ewart, Mosgiel. wrote regarding the entrance to Anglican Church at Brighton (formerly the Gospel Hall, next to Mr Aslin’s property) .—Property owners alongside to las asked to shift the fences back to the boundary line, after chairman and clerk, and tho member' for'the riding had inspected the locality, in the company'of tho inspector of works.

A. E. Scorgic, Leo Elat, pointed out that tho low road to his place required grading.—Road to be graded; Mr Scorgic to be asked to help. E. C. Kinsman, Matarae, wrote regarding wing fences for sheep at Road and railway bridge, Sutton. He would cart posts and wire free.—Left to the clerk and inspector to make inquiries, with power to act. GENERAL. Tenders were dealt with for dog collars, and that of Messrs J. M'Grath and Co. accepted. ■ It was decided that the potholes on the Outram-Allanton road be attended to, and on Gladstone road north and East Taicri maintenance gravel to La run out.
