AQUATIC CARNIVAL

KIWI CLUB’S EFFORTS , SOME EXCITIIiQ FINISHES Scheduled as a Show Night* attraction, the swimming carnival staged by the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club at the Municipal Baths last night was a most successful affair, the attendance being the largest seen at' a local carnival for some time. There acre over 700 spectators, the Baths being well packed, and as a result the chib should come out of the carnival well on the right side of the ledger. No doubt the approach of tho New Zealand national championships, which, are to be held in Dunedin this year, has something to do with the increased interest that is being- shown in swimming. An enjovabl© programme was presented, and, though none was particularly outstanding, some lair times were registered in the various swimming events. Tho finishes, generally speaking, were close, and the final of the 133Jyds interclub relay handicap was ono of the most exciting races seen locally for a long time. It resulted in a win for Dunedin No. 2 (osecj by the barest possible margin from Kiwi No. 1 (Isec). Added interest was lent to the race by tho presence of two ladies teams, one of which (Dunedin Ladies) finished third, with a handicap of 16sec. R. C. Calder, Now Zealand mens diving champion, not only carried off the neat dive, but also won the 33Jyds handicap, in which he was conceded 1,1 sec by tho scratch man. Calder and A. Rix, both members of tho Dunedin Club, displayed a fine sporting spirit in agreeing to give an exhibition of fancy diving during the evening, their display being much appreciated by tho public. Calder, in particular, was in fine form, and among the dives he executed were a oiie-aud-a-liali somersault, an Isaiuler running (off ono loot), a double somersault, and a back somersault, as well as tho amusing “Angel’s Dive.” Rix is a young diver, who also performed well. The breast-stroke handicap won by A. Harrod (Isec) was a good race, as was also the 100yds handipap, winch was won bv J. Fleming (3scc), the back-marker, T. Harland, swimming well to secure second place in very fair time. Tho ladies’ handicap lost in interest by the last-minute withdrawal of Miss K. Miller, and resolved itself into, a duel between Miss M. Fleming (Sscc) and Miss M. Jcpson (scr), the former’s handicap being too great for the backmarkcr, who finished second one and a-half lengths back.

i An interesting game of voter polo was played, a big improvement in the players being noticeable. The novelty event, “South Polo Expedition,” was most amusing, a number of swimmers being blindfolded and having to chase another swimmer who moved about the i water ringing a bell. ! The carnival was well managed, the ! general arrangements, which were in the capable hands of the secretary (Mr R. Hector), leaving little to. bo desired. Mr I). Watson was an efficient starter, and Mr H. V. Jewed was check starter. The latter was also the polo referee, the swimming judges being Messrs T; Hughes, A. Murdoch, and T. Caddie. The diving judges were Messrs T. Hughes, D. Watson, and H, V. Jerred, and the time-keepers Messrs IT. A. Hogg, E. J. Thomson, and S. Crooks. Mr It.
