ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
For the fourth and final concert of the fortieth season in His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday next, 28th, the Dunedin Orchestral Society will submit to its patrons a programme delightfully varied, and in point of merit fully up lo tho standard maintained in the past. The principal work will be ‘Scenes Pittoresques ’ (Massenet), embracing the four numbers—‘ The March? ‘ Air dc Ballet,’ ‘ Angelas,’ and ‘ Fete Boliemc.’ Each number is typical of its name, and tho composer has given a faithful and delightful musical theme to each. The ‘Angelas’ is an outstanding example of the gift of musical expression. Tho overtures ‘ Rienzi ’ (Wagner) and tho * Barbior de Seville ’ (Rossini) arc representative of two totally different schools of musical reform and harmony,_ the German arid the Italian. ‘Rienzi’ is perhaps more suggestive of tho blood and iron of Wagner’s works than anything he wrote, and is in vivid contrast to that which came from tho pen of Rossini, one of the most delightful composers of charming melody. A selection from the. ‘Tales of Hoffmann’ (Offenbach) will he welcomed. It contains well-known melodies from the best known of his operas, amongst them the over-popular 1 1 Barcarolle.’ An interesting contribution to tho programme will be two numbers from the pen of Mr J. C. Easton, well known in local musical circles. The first, ‘Polina,’ is a Polish dance characteristic of the national dance music of Poland. _Tho second is in .minuet form, for .strings only, and is also _ emblematic of its title. The concluding item by the orchestra is tho march ‘Torok Magvar’ (Reeder),, by rocpiest. The vocalists supporting the j orchestra are Miss Yalda M‘Curdy and Mr Walter Mitchell. Both are well and favorably known to local audiences, and their contributions will lend variety to tho entertainment. A feature also will be the well-known sextet from ‘Lucia di Lammermoor,’ by advanced pupils of Mr John Leech. This final concert of the Orchestral Society promises to make a. fitting close to a successful season. Box plan opens tomorrow for subscribers, ami on .Saturday for non-subscribers.
