CARE OF IMMIGRANTS

CHURCHES TAKING ACTION A meeting of clergymen, convened by the Eev. G. Miller, was held in the mayor's room this morning, His Worship (Mr Taverner) presiding. Those present ,wci;o Brigadier Burton and the Eev. Messrs Bryan King, H. B. Bellhouse, W. A. Ilamblett, G. Moroton, and W. Trotter. The object was to take into consideration tho imperative necessity of ostablishlishing receiving depots or accommodation barracks for tho reception and care of immigrants. It was considered that valuable aid could be given to new arrivals if they were under tho care of clergymen representing the churches. Mrs Jones Neilson, of tho British Immigrants’ Club, Dunedin, was present, and intimated that she was arranging to discuss ifco question generally with Mr L. S. Amery when ho reaches Wellington. Thu following motion was carried “ That this meothing of ministers urges on the Immigration Department tho urgent need of establishing receiving depots for the reception and caro of immigrants’ arriving in the four centres.” In order to give permanence to tho movement and to ensure its adequate backing, those present agreed to make representations to their respective religious bodies that a committee fully representative of tho various denominations bo set up to deal with all matters regarding immigration, and that steps be taken to appoint representatives accordingly.
