CONSTABLE SAVES NEGRO
ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE THWARTED OUT-OF-WORK COOK'S BESFAI3IKG ACT (Tub United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, November 11. A negro named llobert Harris, about 50 years of age, residing at Onehunga, was found with a gas tube in Jus mouth about 10 o’clock this morning. Mrs Harris informed a neighbor Unit her husband told her to go away for a while, as ho iiitendecl_ to do lor himself. The police were immediately summoned, and when Constable Jones and Mounted Constable Hinton arrived they found Harris lying on the kitchen floor with the gas tube in his mouth and his body full of gas. Constable Jones sent for a doctor, who arrived about 11 o’clock, just as Harris was coming round, thanks to the efforts oi Constable Hinton, who took Karris outside in the open air and applied artificial respiration with vigor. His efforts were successful after an hour s desperate battle. Harris was taken to the police station and charged with attempting to commit suicide. He is a cook by occupation, and has been witnout woik for some time.
