PETROL TAX

*Oll COMPANIES’ PEOFiT WHAT Will CONSUMER PAY ? [l'com Our Pakliauentaet lir, porter.} 'WELLINGTON, November 9. Various estimates were made by members during the debate on the Petrol Tax Bill as to what consumers will pay as the result of the oil companies having to meet a Customs duty of 4d a gallon on importation. The Prime Minister ridiculed the view that the result would bo a rise of 5d a gallon. Ho knew there must bo an addition to the 4d, but to talk of 5d was ridiculous. “It is no use trying to make huge profits from it,” added Mr Coates. “ Every man is entitled to his profit, but to talk of a penny is ridiculous. It might bo a farthing.” The Premier mentioned that arrangement had been made for petrol to be stored in bond. This duty is payable only when the petrol goes into consumption.
