A ROMAN BUILDING

DISCOVERY OF REMAINS AT NEWCASTLE Further interesting finds of Homan remains have just been made in the grounds of Alderman J. IT. Weidncr, at Condercurn, in the suburbs of Newcastle. Excavation work, which was carried on last vear, has b.ecn renewed under the .superintendence of Mr J. A. Pctch, of Manchester University. The finds include the remains of a Homan civilian building and a handsome bronze head, presumably broken from the statuette of a Homan lady. The head and neck down to the shoulders are in perfect condition. The civilian building is comparatively well preserved, and walls Jjft in height have been laid hare. It is at least 40yds long and 40yds wide, but the dimensions cannot bo accurately determined at present. The work is to go on for a month, and it is hoped that some light may be thrown on The history of the civil settlement which existed outside the Roman port of Condercum. The date of the Homan fort at Benwell is given as 120 a.d., and the civil settlement was contemporaneous. It is expected that some accurate dates will be arrived at from the pottery that will doubtless be unearthed. Already some substantial pieces of red pottery or Samian ware have been found, one of the latest finds being a large piece of a decorated Samian howl with the has® intact. Some of tho remnants of, pottery show quite clearly the potter’a marks or stamps.
