WON IN A CANTER
Count Cavonr was scratched for the Canterbury Cup, leaving only three starters—Dimenck (A. E. Ellis), Star Stranger (Roy Reed), Footfall (F. E. J ones.).
Footfall acted as early pacemaker, and at a slow pace opened out a two lengths’ lead from Star Stranger and Limerick. Entering the straight Star Stranger moved away a little from Limerick. The pacemaker (Footfall) was two lengths ahead of Star Stranger, with Limerick three lengths hack. The trio were moving slowly along the straight. Passing the stand Footfall was just in front of Star Stranger, with Limerick tucked in behind. They were only jogging. “Hurry up!” was yelled by the crowd. Turning out of tho straight there was no change in tho order, but a little further on Limerick made a burst which took him to the front. The champion opened up a break of two lengths Horn Footfall and Star Stranger. The lastnamed raced up to Footfall, and they both moved up behind Limerick. The pace was on now. Star Stranger passed Footfall, and got to within a neck of Limerick. With six furlongs to go, Limerick was the best part of a length ahead of Star Stranger, with Footfall six lengths away. .Limerick quickly opened up a two lengths’ lead, and Reed got to work on Star Stranger to make up the handicap. Limerick entered the straight still two lengths in front, and Footfall commenced to make his run, and ranged alongside Star Stranger. Tn .line for the judge, Ellis had tho whip out on Limerick. He took him out to tho centre of tho course. Star Stranger took the rails, and Footfall was on the outside. In a canter, Limerick Avon by four lengths from Footfall, with Star Stranger five lengths hack. Time, iimiii 59soc. Limerick showed his superiority, and was none the worse for his exertion when he returned to the birdcage.
