FOR THE CAUSE OF PEACE
CONCERT AT COLDMBi COLLEGE,
A bright and enjoyable concert under the auspices of the Dunedin branch of the League of Nations Union, and assisted by the Columba College Old Girls’ Association, was given in the Constance Hall at the college last evening. There was a largo attendance of present girls, old girls, friends, and parents, and they fully appreciated the efforts of the performers, who were all loudly applauded. The Rev. H. E. Bellhouse (president of the Dunedin branch of tho League of Nations Union) addressed tho gathering briefly on tho ideals and purposes of the League, which lie described as a machine for regulating the affairs of the world and for keeping, peace between the nations. It was but a bantling of eight years (having been born on April 19, 1920), but it was of fairly sturdy growth, and had already been the means of averting three wars.
A delightfully-played overture opened j tho programme, and this was followed j by a peace pageant playlet entitled j ‘Humanity Delivered,’ in which most t of the college girls participated. Al-j though the piece was a difficult one, j the girls carried it out creditably. The j scene depicted Humanity bound in the I chains of war and strife, and one by. | one tho great reformers, philanthro-vi pists, and thinkers of the past come = forward and plead tho cause of the brotherhood of man. Humanity, however, is not convinced even by the evidence of representatives of the peoples - of the earth, who have suffered in bondaeg; but Reason opens her eyes when' tho juvenile League of Nations states her case. And it all ends in a joyful procession and a hymn, ‘ These Things Shall Be.’
Miss M. Armour sang ‘Only the' River Running By ’ very sweetly. Other, numbers were songs by Miss M. M'Gill (‘ Over the Meadows ’) and Miss M. Goldsinid (‘Love and Music,’ from ‘ Tosca ’); pianoforte duet Serenata ’)| by Misses P. Lavender and R. Moore; 1 Grecian dance by Miss Dorothy Dean ; recitation by Miss Heather Smith; and a pianoforte solo (‘Naila Waltz’) by Miss M. Wood. Miss P. Blyth played the accompaniments. At the conclusion of the performance Mrs Denton Leech (secretary of the League of Nations Union) expressed her thanks for “ this very great contribution to the cause.’’
