DUKEDIN CLUB'S CARNIVAL SUCCESSFUL OPENING MEETING With the Now Zealand championships to bo decided in Dunedin in January, interest in swimming promises to bo very keen this season, and the first swimming meeting held under summer time, which was staged by the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club in the Municipal Baths last night, was witnessed by a large gathering of spectators. The meeting was a most enjoyable one, for, despite the earlincss of the season, the ramng was keen, even if the times were not outstanding In some of tlio events the entries were a little disappointing, but in the majority large fields were the order, and tho carnival can be regarded as an auspicious beginning to the season. A few of tho races were Avon by rather Avido margins, due, no doubt, to the fact that a number of ucav and unknown SAvimmers Averc taking part; but some fine finishes Avere Avitncsscd during the evening, tho best being the 100yds breast stroke handicap, Avhich was Avon by the ex-Otago champion J. ]/. M‘lndoe, avlio is now president of tho Otago Centro. Ho Avas on the 3sec mark, and swam a good race to Avin by a touch in Imin 30 2-ssec. The interclub relay handicap provided another stirring finish, Dunedin No. 2 (ssec) boating IviAvi (3sec) by the barest possible margin. Miss M. Jepson, tho Otago 100yds ladies’ champion, swam last for Dunedin, registering good time over tho length. The promising intermediate swimmer T. Ilarland won the 100yds interchib handicap in 71 l-ssoc from J. Fleming, both being on the 2sco mark, 'The 33;,yds handicap was avon comfortably by 11. Kerr, avlio was rather leniently treated Avith 4sec. The neat dive fell to 11. C. Calder, the Noav Zealand men’s diving champion, who also accounted for the novelty event, tho ribbon dive, the long plunge being Avon by J. L. MTndoc at 47ft Bin—a good effort. Neither Miss K. Miller nor Miss M. Jepson contested Urn ladies’ GGjjyds handicap, in which the time Avas slow. During tlio evening a diving exhibition Avas given by 11. C. Caldcr (Ncav Zealand men’s diving champion), H. E. Walker (cx-Ncav Zealand men’s diving champion), and Miss M. Morrison (exNew Zealand ladies’ diving champion), a fine display being giA'eu. Caldor and Walker executed some daring and difficult fancy dives, the exhibition being a most spectacular one. Included among Calder’s dives Avere a Mol bury somersault, a double-back somersault, and an I.samlcr running (off one foot). The conduct of the carnival. Avhich was declared open by Cr C. H. Hayward, left little to bo desired, and the events Aver© got off with despatch. Mr W. Jenkins was the starter and Mr H. V. Jerred check starter. The swimming judges Avere Messrs G. Caldcr, E. G. James, and W. H. Saunders, and tho diving judges Avere Messrs K. G. James, W. H. Matthews, and W. Jenkins. Mr D. Jlannatyno Avas the megaphonist, and Sir B. H. B. Pinfold Press steward. Hamilton led Avith Syds to go. but Boyd OA'crhauled him and won by a touch. Time, 17 l-ssec. Second Heat.—B. Kerr (4soc) 1, J. Fleming (lsec) 2. Three starters. Won easily by several lengths. Time, 17 4-sscc. —Final.— B. Kerr (lsec) I W. P. Boyd (scr) 2 W. H. Hamilton (lsec) and J. Fleming (lsec), dead heat 3 Kerr led throughout, and though Boyd reduced the gap towards tho finish Kerr had plenty in reserve and Avon by a couple of lengths, Hamilton and Fleming being close up in third place together. Tbo diving comprised a running and a standing dive off both tho loav and 10ft boards. The standard throughout ivas a high one, the Avinner being R. Caldcr, the New' Zealand men’s diving champion. 100 YARDS INTERCLUB HANDICAP. T. Harland (2sec) I J. Fleming (2scc) ... 2 H. E. Walker (ssec) 3 Four starters. Walker led over the first lap, closely followed by Harland, Miss M, Jepson, the Otago ladies’ 100yds champion, avlio aims on the scratch mark, bringing up the rear, SAviraming a smooth, easy stroke, Harland led over tho last Jap, and Avon comfortably by a length from Fleming, Walker finishing third ahead of Miss Jepson. Time, 71 l-sscc. LIFE SAVING HANDICAP (second and fourth methods). H. Devlin and S. Fogg (scr) ... 1 J. Swan and L. Pithie (scr) 2 Only starters. Won easily by several lengths. 33 1-3 YARDS JUNIOR BOYS’ HANDICAP (14 years and under). W. Jarvis (3sec) ... 1 11. Goddes (lsec) 2 Five starters. A good race, Jarvis winning by half a length from Geddes, who finished strongly. Time, 24 3-ssec. 133 1-3 YARDS INTERCLUB RELAY HANDICAP (Two men and two ladies). Dunedin No. 1 (A. Rix and J. Fleming and Misses M. Jepson ami D. Fleming), Gseo 1 Kiwi (A. E. Short and \Y. P. Boyd and Misses D and M. Morgan), 3sec _ 2 Dunedin No. 2 (W. Cunningham and R. Calder and Messrs F. Fleming and D. Murdock), scr 3 Only starters. One of the best races of the evening. Dunedin No. 1 team held a lead of several yards from Kiwi Avhen Miss M. Jepson moved off ahead of the KiAvi representative, W. P. Boyd. Boyd challenged strongly, but Miss Jepson, who was swimming avoll, spurted, and in a, clinking finish she Avon by scarcely a touch, Dunedin No, 2 being third. Time, Imin 28 4-ssec. RIBBON DIVE. R, Caldcr 1 Ten competitors took part in this event, in Avhich they had to dive over a rope stretched above the loav board and raised at intervals. G 6 2-3 YARDS LADIES’ INTERCLUB HANDICAP. Miss D. Morgan (7see) 1 Miss D. Murdock (lsec) 2 Miss M. Fleming (scr) 3 Five starters. Miss Morgan led all the Avar to Avin comfortably by nine lengths from Miss Murdock, Miss Fleming being close up third. Time, 5G 3LONG PLUNGE. J. L. M‘ Indoe, 47it 3in 1 Miss M. Jepson, 39ft 2 Six competed, M'lndoc’s plunge being easily the best. BLINDFOLD RACE. A. Knight and Miss D. Fleming ... 1 P. Matheson and Miss D. Murdock 2 Four pairs competed in this race, Avhich Avas productive of much amusement.
