Mr F. Marric, who has been manager of the Commercial Bank in Christchurch for tho last fourteen years, has received notice of his promotion to the position of inspector at head office in Melbourne. Mr R. H. Camm, manager of tho bank in Invercargill, will succeed Mr Marrie in Christchurch.— Special to ‘Star.’ Mr J, A. Shand, Wellington, and formerly of Dunedin, is at present on a visit "to this city, lie is staying at the Excelsior Hotel. At the monthly meeting of tho Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors, which was held yesterday afternoon it was unanimously decided that tho appreciation and thanks of the board be conveyed to Mr Allan Wilkie for tho special concessions which he had granted to pupils of the schools who desired to hear the Shakespearean plays. It was decided also to thank Mr Wilkie for the instruction and pleasure his performance of tho plays had given to tho whole city. At the annual meeting of tho Dunedin branch of the Royal New Zealand Society for tho Health of Women and Children, held yesterday afternoon, tho chairman, Mr W. B. Taverner (mayor), referred to the honor in the form of a knighthood which had been bestowed upon the society’s honorary surgeon, Sir Louis Barnett. ' The motion was carried uuaniniMis'y A Christchurch Association message announces the death of Mr Clement Lester Wiggins. He was bom in England in 1843, became an assistant master at Christ’s College in 1896, and subsequently was head of the Dunedin preparatory school. The death occurred at Napier yesterday of Mr lan Hay, a well-known surveyor of the Lands and Survey Department in Dunedin. Mr Hay, who had been in ill-health for some years, went north five months ago, in the hopes that the northern climate would benefit him. On Sunday he was admitted to the hospital, his death occurring suddenly yesterday at tho age of thirtyfive. The deceased, who was a son of the late Mr John Hay, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Southland, leaves a widow (a daughter of Mr R. Jamieson. of this town) and two young children. The mayor (Mr W. B. taverner), who was tho chairman at a meeting held yesterday afternoon of the Dunedin branch of tho Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children, proposed a motion of_sorrow and sympathy in connection with the deaths' which had occurred since the last annual meeting of two of the society’s prominent members, tho late Lady King and the late Airs Theomin. He stated that he wished to express the regret of the organisation, and to convey a message of condolence to the relatives of the late members. In spontaneous accordance with the motion those present stood for a lew moments. Tho Education Board approved of tho following appointments at tins morning’s meeting;—John Campbell, head master, Weston; Margaret Murphy, sole teacher, Oturehua; Austen J. Squires (Oamarn), Afr A. 11. Suott (Invercargill), Air and Airs J. Iloovio and Air J. D Edgar (Tapamii). Sir Louis and Lady Barnett oro at present visiting Dunedin. Air Alanrico Ralph, representative for E. J. G-rnvestock Attractions, arrived lapt evening to make arrangements for the coming Dunedin season of Mr Alexander Watson, tho famous English platform celebrity. Air James Horn, M.P., left for Wellington this morning. Air T. Somerville started by train to-day for a trip north as far as Napier. Air James M‘Donald, of Wellington, brought his Dunedin visit to an end this morning and went off by tho 11.34 train.

Mr John Wilson and Mr J, T. Hamann, appointed to represent Dunedin at the Fire Board’s Conference, left for Wellington this morning. Messrs C. J. Broad and Graham, the Invercargill delegates, .went on also. Private cable from Dr Holmden, referring to the taxi accident in London (cabled yesterday) states that her injuries w'oro trivial ajnd that she is leaving for Devon.—Auckland Press Association telegram. At the office of Messrs Skene, Ltd., a pleasant function took place when Miss Rita Blackwood, who is severing her connection with the firm, was presented with a gold wristlet w'atch by the firm and a hand mirror by the staff. Mr Skene, in making the presentation, referred to tho good qualities of the recipient. A Press Association cable from London announces the death of Sir Ernest Hatch, aged sixty-eight. He wms for a long period associated with the Home Office and departmental committees relating to colonial and foreign matters.
