PREVENTION SOCIETY’S MEETING Tlio monthly meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday afternoon, and 1 was attended by Sir George Fenwick (in the chair), Mrs Porteous, Miss Porteons, the Rev. W. Saunders, Messrs W. F. Sligo, Crosby Morris, W. D. Snow- 1 ball, J. M’Gregor, A. D. Sutherland, J. Sheppard, and tho inspector (Mr J. Craig). Tho Hon. G. M. Thomson wrote asking for a list of tho societies ior the, prevention of cruelty to animals. His IJill for preventing tho shooting of birds from traps would pass the Legislative Council on July 20, when it would go to the other House. He wished to ask tho various branches of the society to write their members asking for their support. —The Secretary reported that tho information had been forwarded, and the Chairman said that ho had drafted a letter to he forwarded to the Otago members of Parliament. ' Tho secretary of tho Southland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wrote regarding the Wellington S.P.C.A. request that the societies outside of Wellington should forgo any claim they might have to tho Mary Ann Buckley bequest. It had been decided that the Southland Society did not feel justified at present in forgoing any claim it might have, and it desired to know the view of the Otago Society m respect to tho Wellington Society’s request that it he made the sole beneficiary in tho Mary Ann Buckley bequest. , . , , The North Otago Society wrote stating that it was taking no action in tho matter until tho attitude of tlio otHci South Island branches was ascertained. The Nelson Society wrote asking for the Otago Society’s co-operation in the endeavor to have all the societies for the prevention of cruelty to_ animals in New Zealand participating in the splendid boo nest of Mrs Buckley. The Chairman said that at tho sonoty’s Inst mooting the view was token that Mrs Buckley had intended the bequest for the Wellington Society. The Otago Society seemed to ho alone in that respect, as most of the other societies seemed to think they should parfcicipote. He, however, thoiicht thou decision not to claim any portion of tho beon'est was the right one. Mr Sligo; The Nelson letter throws some light on tho subject. The Chairman said that the Otago Society had already renounced its chum, though it was open to anv member to reopen the matter if it were thought the letters received threw any Iresli ‘light on the onestion. It was eventually resolved that the society’s decision to renounce any claim on tho bequest should stand, the other societies to he advised accordingly. _ Messrs Adams Bros, wrote enclosing deed of release and administration in the estate of Sarah Reeves for execution by the president and secretary of the society.
