CANNED MEAT
THE NAVAL CONTRACT AUSTRALIA’S TENDER. Press Association—By Telegraph— Copyright. LONDON, May 4. No announcement has been made concerning the tinned meat contract. It is understood that Australia would have obtained the whole of the contract, but as the tenderers do not supply lib, 21b, and 41b tins, under the cold nickle process, these will be_ given to South America; but Australia will be given the 61b tins, which is the major part of the contract. . .[A previous message^stated: The Admiralty is experiencing considerable difficulty in deciding oti the canned meat contract. It is obvious that South America has severely cut the prices, but the department is impressed by the Press insistence for dominion preference and the adverse comment in the House of Commons on Argentina getting the last contract. The matter h&s been referred to the supreme head of the Admiralty Contracts Department to decide. There is a strong hope that Australia will finally be favored.]
