NORTH-EAST HARBOR NOTES

[From Our Correspondent. J The social held in tho hall on Saturday, the 2nd inst., under the auspices of the Wharfdale Queen _ Committee, proved a successful function. There was a large gathering of dancers arid others, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Excellent music was supplied by the Mexicano Orchestra, and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr L. Kellett. During the evening the art union raffles organised by the committee were drawn.; Miss M. Brown, the Colindell queen, carried out the drawing, which was supervised by'Constable Souter on behalf of the Police Department. A very successful card evening, under the auspices of the Colindell queen section, was held in Malcolm’s Tea Rooms on Monday, 4th inst., there being over sixty persons_ present. In addition to the progressive euchre tournament there were games, etc. Supper was provided, while dancing and musical items were enjoyed by the younger members of the company. Prizes were given for the euchre, Mrs Budd winning the lady’s, Messrs Andrews and Rattray being equal for the gents’, tho former winning tho play-off. Mrs Hughes and Mr A. 0. Fountain won the booby prizes. Mr J. Brown thanked Mr and Mrs Malcolm for their kindness in providing the evening. In order that the children might enjoy themselves at an afternoon s outing in the fresh air a little function was arranged by Mr and Mrs J. Brown at their home, Twilight, on Saturday, 2nd inst, Mr C 4. Bewley kindly placed the use of one of his sections at their disposal; An enjoyable time was spent in various games, and a number of races were also included in tho afternoon’s sport. Miss M. Brown and a number of assistants attended to the sweets and variety stall and good business, was transacted. Afternoon tea was handed round. Thanks were extended to the hosts and Mr Bewley for tho pleasant time provided for all. The final of the card evenings nt the private homes of members of the queen carnival committees was held at Mr Free’s on Thursday. Over forty took part in the progressive euchre tournament. Supper was < handed round. Six ladies tied for first prize, and in the play-off Miss Martin proved the winner, tho gentleman’s first prize being won by Mr Porterfield.. The booby prizes were secured, by Mrs Lambeth and Mr A. 0. Fountain respectively. Games and, dancing were also indulged in, and at the conclusion Mr Brown, chairman of tho Colindell queen section, thanked one and all for the support given to their various functions, and specially thanked Mr and Mrs Free for their kindness and hospitality during the evening. Mr Milward, on behalf of tho Wharfdale section, also expressed thanks. During the evening tho aggregate prizes throughout the competitions were presented, the .winners being Mrs Kellett. and Mr Andrews respectively. The winners of the special aggregate prizes for non-winners were Mrs Henderson and Mr Hinkley. The final function in connection with the raising of funds towards the queen carnival was held in tho hall on Saturday evening, when tho Colindell Queen Committee held a successful social. The hall was nicely decorated for the occasion with streamers and bunting, the queen’s colors, blue and white, predominating, while the distribution of dozens of colored gas balloons added to tho effect. Interest was stimulated by the fact that the hon. treasurer IMr T. G. Brickelll announced the elected queen and the financial result of the carnival during the proceedings. Excellent ■ music for the dancing was provided by East's Orchestra. A progressive euchre tournament was held, the prize winners being Mrs Lambeth and Mr Budd, sen., while the booby prizes went to Mrs Rattray and Mr C Free. Shortly after 10 o’clock the chairman of the Ratepayers’ Association (Mr Gibson), accompanied by tho executive officers of each of the queen committees and the treasurer of the general fund, announced the result of the carnival contest. He stated _ that Miss Maggie Brown, the Colindell queen, had been elected, an announcement that" was received with loud applause. The treasurer then stated that tho financial result was most satisfactory, the total net amount raised being £327 18s 3d, of which Colindell section contributed £175 and Wharfdale £152 18s 3d. Ho referred to the good work done by the secretaries of each section. Messrs Riddell and Brown ns chairmen of tho two sections exchanged good wishes and congratulations on the excellent results attained. Tho two queens, Miss Maggie Brown and Miss Koa Riddell, were then escorted to seats on the stage and were given hearty Dancing was kept up with zest till midnight. Mrs Sutherland’s prize was won by Miss Smvth, of George street, Dunedin. Harvest thanksgiving services were held in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday last, there being a nice collection of fruit, • egctables, flowers, preserves, and eatables displayea, which were afterwards distributed among the church orphanages. The morning service was conducted by the Rev. air Evans and the evening service by the Rev. W. W. M'Arthur, at each of which appropriate sermons were delivered to largo congregations. The annual meeting of the Northeast Harbor Card Club was held on Tuesday evening, Mrs Chnllis (vicepresident) in the chair. Tho balancesheet showed that the expenditure for the season had been a little more than the revenue, the small credit balance standing at tho commencement having been absorbed. The election of officers for tho ensuing season recruited as follows.—President, Mr G. Ferguson; vice-president, Mrs Challis; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Niven; committee—Mesdamos Hellyer, Hook, Ferguson. Riddell, Messrs Hinkley, Bewley, Rattray, and Shurrock. It was resolved that the season open on the 19th inst. and close on August 30, and that tho tournament commence on tho 26th inst. and finish on August 23, two nights to be left open if necessary. It was decided that eight games of progressive euchre bo played each tournament evening. It was resolved that application bo made for the use of the hall for the season, and that the Ratepayers’ Association be asked for a reduction in the rental charged. With regard to the allocation of the 40 per cent, of the queen carnival funds, it was resolved that the club’s portion be handed over to the Ratepayers’ Association towards the reclamation of the playing area. A meeting of tho committee of the Ratepayers’ Association was held on Wednesday evening, and was attended by Messrs Gibson (chairman), Brickell, Brown, Gregory, Kellett, Rowlands, Brookman (secretary), and Malcolm. With regard to the proposed alterations to the kitchen, it was decided to call tenders for same from the local builders. In reply to the committee’s application to the Road Board for the vesting of the “muddy” in the Ratepayers’ Association, a reply was received to the effect that the application had been referred to the County Council for its favorable consideration. It was rsolved that a social be held on Saturday evening, the funds to go toj wards the proposed alterations, it was i also decided To hold a social on Easter j Monday evening, at which the Colindell Queen art unions will be drawn. Some discussion tok place with regard to the crowning ceremony in connection with the queen carnival. Mr Brickell outlined the steps he had taken in regard to the formulating of a suitable programme for the function in the_ hall, and it was resolved that the function be carried out 'is previously decided on, and that Mr Brickell be appointed director of ceremonies. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Monday evening and was, attended by- Messrs J; M‘D6c-

aid, (chairman), Duthio (secretary), Ferguson, Scott, and Wilson, The secretary submitted a copy of the balancesheet for the past year, which was approved. The chairman and secretary were appointed to draw up the annual report for presentation to the householders’ meeting on Wednesday, 20th inst., at 7.30 p.m. The headmaster reported on the attendance for the past month as followsßegan; Boys 61, Girls 57; total. 108. Ended—Boys 49, girls 54; total, 103. Average—Boys 44.5, girls 51.5; t0ta1,,96, ■ A combined memorial service will ho held in tho hall on Aazac morning under the allspices of the Ratepayers’ Association, when representatives of tho local churches will conduct tho devotional services, A parade of returned soldiers in the district will bo held, and the Peninsula Masonic and Oddlellows’ Lodge members will also attend the parade. The Glee Club will assist with the musical programme. The last of the Wharfdale card evenings in connection w ith the carnival was held in the hall last Wednesday evening, and proved a most enjoyable function. There was a largo gathering of players, including a number of enthusiasts from the Broad Bay Club, while dancing was indulged in by tho younger folk. Mrs Hook won the lady’s prize, and Messrs Ferguson and Milward tied for the gent’s prize, the former winning tho cut. Mrs Duthio and Mr C. Marett gained tho hoohy prize.
