LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS

MILTON / Nominations for the biennial election of mayor and councillors for Milton, also representative for Milton on the South Otago Hospital Board, closed at noon yesterday. As was freely anticipated, a straight-out contest results for the mayoralty and Hospital Board. The retiring mayor (Mr Leslie William Potter) is opposed by Mr Alexander Ronnie, the former occupant of the mayoral office, whom Mr Potter defeated at the 1925 elections by the narrow margin of 12 votes. Canon J. C. Small declined lo seek re-election on the South Otago Hospital Board, and Mr Rennie (former representative) is opposed in his candidature by Mr G. Hamilton Thomson.. Contrary to expectations, a contest also results for councillors, several “ last-minute ” candidates having been nominated. Only four of the retiring councillors are seeking re-election. Altogether thirteen candidates were nominated for the nine vacancies. The nominations are as follow:

Mayoralty.—Leslie William Potter (proposed by William Kirby and W. Kennedy), Alexander Bennie (proposed by George Dabinett and John W. Read). South Otago Hospital Board. —Alexander Rennie (proposed by J. N. Edgar and A. Taylor), George Hamilton Thomson (proposed by John Taylor and James Gray). Councillors.—James Carruthers (proposed by W. E. Jackson and Robert M'Donald), William John Cockburn (proposed by E. Hollick and D. Taylor), Thomas Harris Fraser (proposed by J. Garfield Stewart and R. A. tong), James Gray (proposed by Georgina M'Millan and Joseph T. M'Corkindale), Albert W. Halton (proposed by A. B. L. Burn and H. H. Wilkinson) , Joseph Reginald Lynch (proposed by J. H. Bateman and ft. H. Wilkinson). Thomas M'Cormack (proposed by J. Taylor and E. Hollick), Donald M'Donald (proposed by John Murray and A. E. Powley), William Nimrao (proposed by C. Gregory and R. Grealish), James Armstrong Stewart (proposed by A. Pringle and A. S. M'Millan), James Garfield Stewart (proposed by T. H. Fraser and W. Gatma.nl, Bohort Turnbull (proposed by H. J. Redded and J. Littlejohn), William Alexander Wilson (proposed by A. B. L. Burn and A. E. Powley).

OTHER CEHTRES Wanganui.—At the municipal elections the present mayor, Mr Hope Gibbons, will be opposed by Mr W. J. Rogers in the Labor interests. There are twenty-two candidates for the twelve council seats, eleven for four seats on the Hospital Board, eight for six seats on the Harbor Board, four lor three seats on the River Trust, and six for four seats on the Power Board. Waipawa.—Three nominations were received for the mayoralty as follow: Messrs H. M. Bathhone (the present mayor), L. Pratley, and W. S. Thackeray. Twelve nominations were received for tho eight vacancies on the council. Mr W. H. Bathhone was re-elected unopposed as the borough’s representative on the Hospital and Power Boards. Hawera.—Mr E, A. Pncey was elected mayor unopposed. Nine nominations were received for the nine vacancies on the Borough Council. Whangarei.—There will be three candidates for the position of Mayor cf Whangarei—Mr J. E. Holmes (mayor), Mr W. 11. Timewell (deputy-mayor), and Mr L. J. Brake (Labor). _ Twelve have been nominated for i lie nine seats on the council, including wee retiring councillors, but more are expected tomorrow. Four have been nomina'ed for the three borough vacancies for the Hospital Board.

Alasterton.—Unusual interest was created at tho last moment in the nomination of local body representatives, and there will be an election for the mayoralty, Borough Council, Power Board, and for the country seats on tho Wellington Harbor Board. For the first time in tho history of the town a woman has been nominated for a scat on the Borough Council.

Fahiatua.—For the mayoralty Mr J. D. C. Crewe was returned unopposed. For the_ council there are twelve candidates, including all the sitting members, for the nine seats. Tho Hospital Board’s renresentative, Mr J. D. C. Crewe, was returned unopposed. For the seat on the Tararua Power Board Air J. D. Wilson, the present representative, and also the chairman of the board, is being opposed by Air J. D. C. Crewe. Greymonth.—For the Greymoutb mayoralty the candidates nominated are Messrs J. AY. Greenslade and W. H. Parfitt (the present mayor). Fourteen have been nominated for seats on the council, nine being required. Nine have been nominated for the HosIpital Board, on which four are required. Four have been nominated for the throe seats on the Power Board, Nelson.—The nominations for the mayoralty are Alessrs William Lock (sitting mayor) and Walter J. Afoffatt. Twenty nominations have been received for the nine seats on the City Council. • Alessrs H. R. Duncan, 11. AI. Aloncrieff, A. Gould, H. W. Kelly, and F. J. Ledger were returned unopposed for the Harbor Board. There arc five nominations for the six seats on the Hospital Board. No nominations have been received for the mayoralty of Richmond, and there are three nominations for the forty-six seats on the Borough Council. For the Alotueka mayoralty Alessrs D. W. Talbot (sitting) and'James A. Wallace have been' nominated. There are nine nominations for the six seats on the,, council. Messrs R. P. Hudson and A. R. Edwards (sitting) were returned unopposed for the Harbor Board. Afrs P. Afoffatt (sitting) was returned unopposed for the Hospital Board.
