SLOW MOTORISTS

ELEVENTH-HOUR RUSH TO REGISTER Motorists may go fast in their cars, but the majority of them axe slow in other ways. Yesterday was the last day for the annual registration of motor vehicles under the Motor Vehicles Act, hut when the office in the Old Post Office closed last night only about half those required to register had done so. There was an eleventh-hour rush yesterday. As usual, the business was left to the last minute, and all day long the clerks had a very busy time. Although yesterday was the last day, the office was open again to-day, aiid from an early hour there were hundreds of motorists making application for registration. Through leaving till the hast minute, or, rather, after it, they have to wait in an impatient queue, though weeks ago the registration could have been effected without loss of time. About 5,000 sets of plates have been issued, which is about half the total number to be handed out. It is possible that the office in the old Post Office will be kept open till the end of the week, but those who have not registered are advised to do so without Joss of time. The police and inspectors are entitled to get on the track of the erring ones at once Under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1924 it is provided that no person shall knowingly use any motor vehicle on any road or street, or permit any motor vehicle to be so used, unless such ve hide is registered in accordance with the Act, and a license to use such vehicle has been issued and remains in force. For every day on which a ve hide remains unregistered the owner is liable to a fine of £2O.
