“OCCASIONAL SPEECHES" Mr A. Gillick (president) presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club, and the Rev, bather APMahon consented to act as judge tor the “occasional .speeches,” the items for the evening, the subjects for winch were drawn in rotation. The following were the subjects and speakers • —‘ The • Observance of Anzac Day’ (Mr A. J. Dowling), ‘Welcoming Royalty to Dunedin’ (Air J* Street,-, ‘Address to a Meeting Con vened to Discuss the Problem of 'Unemployment ’ (Mr J*. Nasii), ‘ Thanks to the" Chinese Community lor its Contnbutton to the Hospital 1 (Mr J. Grindlev), ‘ Proposing tne Toast of the Bride at' a Wedding Breakfast’ (Mr I. Brown), ‘Speech at the Presentation and Rare we 11 to a Fellow-employee ’ (Mr J. N. Smith), ‘ Nominating a Cap.tain of a Football Club lor the Coming Season’ (.Mr A. Giilick), ‘ Comment on Activities of T'ootbali Clubs During the Past Season and Suggestions m the Future’ (Mr J Beard;, ‘A Successful Parliamentary Candidate' Returning Thanks for Flection’ (Mr t. 'Thompson), ‘The Club’s Welcome to Royalty I Air A. J. Dowling i. Jn offering a criticism -.f ‘-he various speeches, Father APAlahou congratulated the speakers, ospceiidy tno beginners. on their praiseworthy efforts, and gave some useful suggestions for future programmes. On the motion of Mr A. Giilick, seconded by Air J. N. Smith, a vote of ’.hanks was accorded Father APAiahop for his valued services to the club. Another interesting and enjoyable evening was held m the club rooms, the special attraction being *. debate whether ‘ The Policy of the Nation Should Re Dictated By Youth Rather Thau By Age.’ Amongst the visitors present were Bishop Wnyto and the Rev. Fathers Tyler, APMahou, and Gavin. Air J. J Marlow ably carried out the duties of judge of the debate, and Air J. N. Smith presided. Speakers in the atilnuativo were Vlor-sis F. Moloney (leader), J. Ryan, and A. J Dowling, and in the negative Messrs J. P. Ward (leader). J. Pledger, and J. ,J. Ai.anow, jun. A well-sustained debate ensued, and very capable arguments for and against Hie proposition were advanced in indormly g-cd speeches. On r .hc vote of the au'.icnice tne affirmative won life debate.
Tins decision; however, was reversed by the judge, who awarded the debate to the negative*, idler Mr Markov ii.id commented in instructive leiu.a on the various speeches, approbation was voiced of tne presence of the bishop and the clergy, who tens gav« further evidence of their valued interests iu the club.
