RETIRING SCHOOLMASTER
The members of the Mornington School Committee entertained a number of ladies and gentlemen in the Masonic Hall on Monday evening, when > chairman, the Rev. S. J. Cooper, presided over a party of forty-five. The guests of the. evening were Mr J. 11. Rutherford and Mrs Rutherford. Mr Rutherford, who has been head master of the Mornington Public School during the past four and a-half years, is retiring on superannuation, and Mr Cooper, on behalf of the committee, presented him with a case of pipes, and a piece of Donlton pottery for Mrs Rutherford. In making the presentation the chairman referred to Mr Rutherford’s sterling qualities as a teacher and citizen, and wished him, on behalf of the committee and friends, long life and happiness in his retirement. In conclusion, Mr Cooper said it was with pleasure they had learned of Mr Rutherford’s decision to make his homo in Mornington, where his experience and helpful advice in all matters pertaining to the school would always be available. Mr Rutherford suitably replied, and thanked the committee on behalf of himself and Mrs Rutherford for their gifts and expressions of' goodwill The Hon. E. H. Clark (Palmerston) spoke in glowing terras of the esteem in which both Mr Rutherford and his wife were held in Palmerston, where Mr Rutherford spent several years as head master' of the Palmerston Public School.. Thereafter a number of toasts were given and enthusiastically responded to. That of the Otago Education Board was proposed by Mr J. Patton, and replied to by Mr J. Wallace (chairman).
