SOUTH AFRICAN BUDGET
UNDERESTIMATED REVENUE HEA f/J'HY FINANCES. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright CAPE TOWN, March 30. (Received March 31, at 10.10 a.m.) The Minister of Finance, in introducing the Budget, said that the increase in revenue over the estimate was £1,700,000. Allowing for increased expenditure there would be a surplus of £1,150,000, which would be applied to the reduction of debt. The Customs revenue alone exceeds the estimate by over £SOO,OOO, which was attributed partly to the excellent season and partly to the enormous production of alluvial diamonds, the proceeds from which were largely spent on high-rated imported articles, such as motor cars and petrol. The Minister estimated the revenue for the coming year at £27,500,000, which he expected would he sufficient to meet mpiirements.
