SHOCKED!
COSTUME TOO SCANTY ? THEATRE DIRECTORS OBJECT. LONDON, November 5. Objecting strongly to the scanty tingfl costume worn by an Arabian slave 'girl appearing with a Sheik in a song scene entitled ‘ While Sahara Sleeps/ at Covent Garden, the directors of the theatre sent a letter to Mr Lawrence Wright, the producer, declaring that the costume was distinctly indecorous, that bare legs on a ballrqonr floor did not accord with the traditions of the Royal Opera-house, and that they must insist on banning the sceua unless the costume was modified. Mr Wright declared that the suggestion is preposterous, and that the scena contains nothing that would not be considered perfectly proper at a vicarage tea party. Moreover, bare legs were very common at the smartest fancy dress balls. He will invite London County Council inspectors to view the performance, and will abide by their decision. Dolly Robins, the dancer concerned, says: “ I have worn many flimsier costiirnes and there have never been any complaints before. Eastern slave girls do not wear red flannelette. Besides, my husband does not object—so that settles it.”
