HIGH SCHOOL'S BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING Tho monthly mooting of the Otago Boys and Girls’ High Schools’ Board was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present Dr G. E, Thompson (in tho chair), Mrs S. M. Park. .lion. 1). T. Fleming, Messrs W. It. Jirngli, T. K. Sidcy, ALP., 11. Webb, and J. AI. Galloway RECTOR’S REPORT. The Rector (Mr W. J. Morrell), in his report, stated that tho school duly reassembled for the third term on Monday, September 20, and that Air J. L. Anderson, 8.A., the additional master appointed owing to Air Worker's departure, took up hxs duties on that day. Tho total number of boys now upon tho school roll is 621, including .190 seniors, 404 juniors, and 21 paying pupils. Tho corespondihg totals for October, 1921-25, arc respectively, 509, 549, 551, 571, and 614. Another generous gift had been presented by one nf our most attached old boys, Air J. J. | Mallard Mr Mallard, who some years ago presented a chollcngo shield for a I relay race, has now been kind enough i to oiler a second shield for a similar! race for junior forms. Tho shield, which . will bo competed for at the annual , sports, is to be known ns the Stuart . Hawthorne Shield, in memory of the j lat-e Air Stuart Hawthorne, who was j rector of tho school when Air Alallard joined in 1874, It was only fitting that mention of the pride with which all connected with tho school regard the fact that an old boy, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, was now Acting Prime Minister of the dominion during the absence ol tiie Hon. Air Coates at the Imperial Conference. Another old hoy, the Rt. Hon. Sir Francis Bell, G.C.M.G., was acting as a delegate from tho dominion to the Imperial Conference with Air Coates. Tie also again represented Hew Zealand at the League of Nations Assembly at Geneva, and had received the high honor of being appointed chairman of Tho Hague Court Committee. LADY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The Lady Principal (Aliss M. H. M. ! King) reported that there were now 166 'i free place girls on tho roll, .‘3OG junior - free place, and 8 paying pupils, making j a total of 450, as compared with 468 - for last year, and 482 for 1924. GENERAL. An application was received from Air S R. Crimp for permission to teach at the Technical College for four hours per week.—Granted. A letter was received from the Education Department authorising the expenditure of £46 12s 6d from endowment income in replacing a number of seats in the hall at the Boys’ High School.—Received. Letters were received from tho lady , principal (a) with regard to the hold- . ing of tho animal prize-giving cere- , mony in His Majesty's Theatre; (b) ■ with regard to repairs to blinds; (e) forwarding letters of thanks from the ■ Plunket Society and the Children’s . Home for parcels of clothing received i from the school.—The holding of the ■ prize-giving ceremony in the theatre • was approved, and the repairs to tho blinds was left in the hands of Airs i Park, with power to act. , A letter was received from Airs K. M- ■ Hill Jack with regard, to street-widen-ing operations near Girls’ Hostel site.— ■ lb was decided to ask the City Council i to erect a fence in a gap in the hedge. A report was received from Messrs • Mandeno and Fraser with regard to the s renovations to the rector’s residence. ■ They submitted tenders, and recoini mended the acceptance of Peter Find- ) lay’s for £54 18s. Tho report was adopted, and the tender was .accepted.

An architectural drawing of Otago Boys’ High School, presented by Mr J. N. Lawson, was received.—Hie Chairman said the question was whether the drawing should lie hung in the school vestibule or in the board room.—The matter was left in the hands of tho chairman and the rector, Air Lawson to be thanked for the gift. A letter was received from Air A. Loo Smith approving of the board’s proposal with regard to the Frank Lee Smith memorial prizes, and enclosing ]iis cheque for £2-5 to odd to tho pniicipal, was received. —It was decided that £SO bo invested in debentures, and Mr Leo Smith to be thanked for Ins cheque.
