SIR JAMES ALLEN
BACK OH UNIVERSITY COUNCIL Sir James Allen, who had been granted leave of absence by tlio Otago University Council every six months for the past twelve years, was welcomed back to the table at yesterday atternoon’s meeting of the council, i Tho Chancellor (Mr I- K. M.P.), in extending a welcome to bir James, pointed out that he was tho oldest member of the council, and he ( _M r sidey) was the only member of tho council present who had sat at tho same council table with Sir James. Ho had watched carefully the work done bv Sir James, and ho congratulated him on tho capacity displayed m carrying out his onerous duties with such distinction to himself and others Tho council was naturally particularly mitercsted in his work for education. * They wore delighted to lind thnt fc>ir 'Janies had returned unimpaired meni tallv ami physically, and he hoped that 1 ho would hud a suitable sphere for his I talents. “ Maybe,” added.the speaker, i “ important duties will devolve upon ! gj r James in Wellington, but ho hoped j that as a life member of the council I he would associate himself again with ' the University.” The Chancellor I pointed out that great progress had been made at the U diversity during, bir • James's absence, pointing out that I many additions had been made to the ! buildings. They had also greatly extended the functions of the institution, hut there was ranch more to be clone. He formally moved a motion welcomSir James back, and also congrntulaUng him on his work lor the dominion and the Empire wmlst High Commissioner. , Mr W. J. Mprrell said that they took ore at pride that one of their members Ead rendered such fine services for the dominion and the Empire. They were grateful for his work in connection with the League of Nations, and they were also pleased that he still retained his connection with the University CounSir James Allen said., that h.e did not know what his future movements would be,' but whatever he was doing he would always take tho greatest interest in tho Otago University. He could not say anything definite until Lady Allen returned to the dominion in December. Sir James was later added to tho Finance, Medical, Works, and Home Science Committees.
