“A POOR SPIRIT”

FR9FESSORIAL BOARD AND ANNIVERSARY BAY The fact that tho Professorial Board decided not to recommend the University Council to observe Anniversary Day as "a holiday provoked a protest from Mr J Wallace at the meeting of the council yesterday afternoon. “It is tho one day when tho University should close its doors,” ho said, and I think the Professorial Board has shown a very poor spirit indeed in taking up the attitude it has.” Mr Wallace’s protest was made after tho reading of a report on the subject by the registrar . , 'The registrar stated in his report that a deputation trom the Professorial Board had waited upon the Early Settlers’ Association concerning the observance of Anniversary Da^. The association was prepared to accept in the meantime the hoard’s suggestion for the reading to the students of a memorial setting forth the story of the foundation of the province. Dr Bonham said the Professorial Board had carefully considered the matter. He pointed out the difficulties in regard to the proposal to close the University on Anniversary Day, emphasising that-it would be necessary to rearr<ing6 tho courses. Tbcy Jind Bcvcrfil holidays to keep, both public and University. and it*was difficult to add to them.’ The students would be addressed during tho day as to tho significance of the occasion. Mr J. C. Thomson moved that the renert he received, and this was carried. .Mr'-Wallace said the University would have- been in a “ very poor street if it hadn’t been for the early settlers. I want again to say that I consider the Professorial Board showed a very poor spirit indeed.” The Chancellor cut short any further discussion by pointing out that the, matter had been disposed of. Mr Wallace later intimated that he would bring down a notice of motion at tho next meeting.
