ST. GEORGE’S, HANOVER SQUARE
• St. George’s Church, Hanover square, the scene of so many lashion vol© yeddings, was formerly esteemed- -mainly on this account —one of the most desirable livings in London. To obtain it the notorious Dr Dodd offered I ndy Apsjey, wif'l of the then Lord Chancellor, a bribe of £3,000._ In addition to the clerical lees, married couples bad formerly to pay a sovereign to the self-styled “ St. George’s Marrowbone and Cluiucr Club,” who serenaded the bride with rough “ music.” In 1829 it transpired that the sum gathered by these means in the course of a year amounted 1o £416. Among the marriages recorded in the register is that of Sir Vvlliam Hamilton to Nelson’s "Emma" in HOI.
