NORTH-EAST HARBOR NOTES

A pleasant social evening was held in Malcolm’s Tea Rooms on Monday evening, the occasion being the official closing of tho Young Men’s Club for the season. There was a large attendance of members, Mr 0. G. Hook (president) being in the chair. The evening was filled in with songs, music, toasts, and social talk, and a plentiful supply of refreshments was provided. The interest and enthusiasm displayed by those present augurs well for the club’s future welfare. East’s Orchestra added to the evening’s enjoyment. I tems were rendered by Messrs H, Riddell, F. Hellycr, J. Niven, W. H. Riddell, R. Hellyer, Forest, and Duncan. Several toasts were honored. At tho football “ smoko ” on Saturday evening the matter of tho formation of a cricket club in tho district was mentioned, and it was considered advisable that such a step should bo taken. As an outcome of ilie_ discussion a shield has been promised for competition between the married and single members, and in addition two medals have also been promised for tho best averages. No doubt such generosity should prove a sufficient inducement to ensure the carrying out of tho proposal to form such a club. The question of Rccdring a suitable site for a pitch will perhaps be the most difficult one to meet, but no doubt if tho matter is gone into wholeheartedly by those interested this obstacle should bo overcome.

Tho final social of tho_ season under the auspices of the , local Anglican Church Committee will be held in tho hall nest Tuesday evening. It has been decided that the function should take tho form of a masked ball, and judging by tho interest being displayed tho gathering should even eclipse tho results attained at previous gatherings. Arrangements have been made whereby buses will leave both from tho Queen’s Gardens and from Portobello at halfpast 7, returning at about 2 a.m. The grand march is timed to start at a quarter past S. The annual Rugby football match for tho Gamble Shield took place on Saturday afternoon in Mr J. Wilson’s paddock. A good game was witnessed, tho contesting teams being tho married versus the single Although tho former only fielded thirteen men, tho game was fairly even up till the last quarter, when the single men gained tho lead to win by 13 points to (I points. For the winners tries were scored by Beard and J. Hook (2), who also potted a goal, while Hay and A. E. Hellycr scored tries for tho losers. Mr W. Rowlands controlled the game. In tho evening a smoke social was held in the hall, when there was a large gathering of players and supporters. Mr W. H. Riddell presided. In the course of his remarks the Chairman stated that tho first match for the shield was played in 1921 between the residents and the week-enders, tho game ending in a draw. Ho referred to tho fine ‘sporting spirit which had always prevailed throughout_the various contests, and said their thanks were due to Mr Gamble for presenting the shield. Musical items were given by Messrs J. Vivian, H. Shnrroch, C. Vivian, W. Brookman, L. Kellctt, Duff, Forrest, W. H. Riddell. An invitation having been received from the Portohollo players to send a team there on Saturday afternoon, the following players have been selected to make the trip;—Leclgerwood, Beard, Whitburn, A Hellyer, Hav, Riddell, Percy, Connell, M'Evoy, j. Honk, Ferguson, R. Hellyer, Robinson, M'Donakl, Lambeth, Landreth, Niven, Waugh. The monthly meeting of the Boating Club was held in the boat shed on Wednesday evening, and was attended by Messrs Gibson (in tho chair), F. Brown, R. Hellyer,_C. J. Hook. C. G. Hook (secretary), Kcllett, W. M'Evoy, Rattray, W. Timms, W. T. Timms. A letter was received from the secretary of tho Ratepayers’ Association with regard to the holding of a queen carnival, ft was stated that the next meeting of delegates from the various clubs would he held on Monday, 18th inst., and the club was asked to send a delegate. Notice of motion was given that the conditions governing the Elliott Cup bo altered to allow of the race being a handicap for 12ft Bin and under, and that no miniature bo given. It was resolved that opening day bo hold on Saturday, November 6„ at 3 o’clock. It was resolved that tho lady friends of th© committee be asked to again assist in tho work of arranging the afternoon tea services. Several members offered the use of their launches for taking out the visitors during the afternoon. It was resolved that Mr Strang’s Cup be allocated for an allcomers’ yacht race for local boats to bo held towards the end of the season. The syllabus of races during tho season was arranged for on practically the same lines as last year. The following officials were appointed in connection with the club races:—Starters, Messrs Brown and M'Evoy; judges, Messrs C. J. Hook and Kellett; timekeeper, Mr Rattray. It was resolved that the Mark Eoy system bo used in club motor boat races. A vote of thanks was accorded last year’s slip committee, and the following were appointed a committee for the ensuing year:—Messrs Brown, C. G. Hook, and Rattray. Tho matter of the suggested alterations to the shed was left over till next meeting. It was resolved that an endeavor be made before next meeting to get a crew to sail the 14-footer Mona. A meeting of members of the committee of the Ratepayers’ Association, together with delegates from the various clubs in the district, was held in tho hall on Monday evening for tho purpose of considering the advisability of holding a queen carnival. Mr Gibson occupied the chair. It was decided that a carnival be held for the purpose of raising funds to provide a playing j area for tho children and adults. It .was resolved that the governing body

consist of representatives of tho Ratepayers’ Association and the various clubs supporting a queen, and that the funds raised bo allocated in the proportion of 60 per cent, for reclamation and 40 per cent, to be divided between the various *«>«‘?ies participating. • Another fine programme was screened by the Paramount Pictures in the hall on Wednesday evening, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the appreciative audience present, .
