MEDICAL RESEARCH
DR MARGILI'S INQUIRIES [PijK UxrrrD I’KK-'S Association.] WELLINGTON. October 8. Dr Makgill, of the Department of Health, who has ret, nrued Iroin a visit to Great liriinm, .states that he took tlic opportunity while in England to go into the question with the health authorities of the part; the Health Department of New Zealand might most usefully take in medical research and certain' other directions. The authorities drew his attenion to the absence of accurate statistics as to the prevalence of cancer in the Native populations. and it was suggested that probably the most satisfactory direction in which New Zealand could contribute to cancer research would be to furnish accurate data of the ages, etc., and the nrevalenoe of cancer among the Maoris •ad the natives of the Pacific .Islands mtler New Zealand’s jurisdiction, ft •ould thus he possible to make a oom•arison of the occurrence .of the lisease amongst European native populations under similar conditions of climate, etc. Although the authorities were quite prepared to supply material for independent experiments in Now Zealand, it was thought that the present expenditure in that direction would probably have less useful results than the supply of accurate, information to assist research experiments in England.
