There has been remarkably steady and active competition throughout the series, despite the miscellaneous character of the offerings'. Continental buyers dominated merinos and also gave good support to medium and fine cross-breds. There were numerous withdrawals of secondhand speculators’ lots, of which the nriceshave shown slight irregularities. Tjie home trade supported slipes and clothing wools generally, and also the cheaper cross-breds, but Bradford was very reserved in merino and combing wool. The tone of the market indicated a general demand for wool. The closed in great confidence at full opening rates. Compared with the July closing sales, merinos, greasy, were fully 5 per cent, up, and some of the finer grades even slightly more; scoureds were 5 per cent, up; cross-breds, medium 10 per cent, up, fine 5 per cent., lower grades 7\ per cent, to 1,0 per cent.; slipes, scoured, 5 per cent.; lambs, merino, 5 per cent, to 10 per cent.; cross-breds. 5 per cent. New Zealand “Fairfield’’ realised 24d.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., received the following cablegram from its London House, under date 6th October:—“As compared. with last sales, closing rates prices are higher about 5 per cent, for merino medium, scoured merino super, coarse greasy cross-bred, coarse scoured cross-bred; higher 5 per cent, to percent. for cross-bred lambs, medium greasy cross-bred, coarse cross-bred slips, fine Scoured cross-bred, medium scoured cross-bred, greasy merino super, fine greasy cross-bred; higher about par to 5 per cent, for merino inferior, merino lambs. The sales closed firmly to-day. Competition on German and French account is active. Home demand is good.”
