OAMARU S.P.C.A.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The remarks made by the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals do not reflect to its credit, in so far as the welfare of the animals in the Oiunani district seems to concern it less than tho possible loss of subscribers there. Tho fact of the inspector calling only nine or ton times a year and the Otago society considering this a sufficient number of visits is surely an admission that fully justifies the formation of a society in Oamaru. There can be no doubt that this society, with Mr Forbes at the head of affairs, is'likely to accomplish lasting good, and bo of wider vision than tho Otago society, which seems, according to reports published, to deal with trivial matters, while glaring wrongs all through the country in the mode of transport of animals in trucks and at the slaugbter-honse appear to pass unnoticed. The cruelty to performing animals is another matter that passes without comment. Judging by their remarks during tho Exhibition regarding animals performing there it seems evident they prelor to blind themselves to the fact that societies are in existence in England and America for the abolition of trained animal performances. There must bo adequate cause for such societies being called into existence. Where is tho branch of the Jack London Club (formed to present this cruelty) in it should be the concern of tho S.P.C.A. In conclusion. I must say that everyone knowing or the work accomplished by Mr Forbes in organising Animal Welfare Week, and thus bringing into greater prominence the need of protecting those unable to voice their own great wrongs, must congratulate him, and wish him every success with the Oamaru S.P.C.A.—I am, etc., September 9. Pboguess.
