CHANNEL SWIM

MISS EDKLE’S SUCCESS SUGGESTED KELP BY TUGS PILOTS MYSTIFIED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 16. (Received August 17, at 9 a.m.) The suggestion that Miss Gertrude Ederle was assisted in her Channel swim by the suction of a d cop-sea tug, in conjunction with the clover navigation of another tug, which destroyed the action of the tide, has been keenly discussed. The Cinque Port pilots aro mystified as to why Miss Ederle, in a sea rough enough to prevent bathing on the Kent coast, made no westward drift, although the current averaged two knots for seven hours. An eye-wituess, interviewed by the ‘Westminster Gazette,’ infers that Miss Ederle swam in a pool of smooth water which moved with the tugs, and thus maintained twice the speed which could ever have been hoped lor in ordinary circumstances.—Sydney ‘ Sim ’ Cable. “RECEIVED NO AID.” LONDON, August 6. (Received August 17, at noon.) At the American Consul’s reception to Miss Ederle at Calais, the editor ot ‘ Le Phare ’ expressed the opinion that a French journalist should have accompanied Miss Ederle’s swim. The comment resulted from the publication of a statement, with eight signatures, including those of the manager’s, other swimmers, and several journalists, that “Miss Ederle received no aid, and abided by all the rules of Channel swimming and international sportsmanship.”—A. and N.Z. Cable.
