SCANDAL IN INDIA
NIZAM CF HYDERABAD SERIOUS CHARGES MADE. CALCUTTA, August 4. It is reported that the Government of India has sent a strong Note to the Nizam of Hyderabad. In the Note are on timer a tod charges against the Nizam and his chief officers of nepotism, corruption, maladministration, unjust treatment of feudatory princes and zami udars (landholders), and the expenditure of large sums on Moslem propaganda in and out of India. Particular mention is made of, the case of a State official said to be carrying on pro-Moslem propaganda in London. It is stated that the communication hints at the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry. [Hyderabad, the premier native State in India, is almost the size of Groat Britain, ' and lias a population of 12,500,000. The Nizam, who receives a salute of twenty-one guns, has the handling of an annual revenue of over £4,000,000. Neither the Indian Legislature nor the Provincial Legislative Councils can legislate for native States, nor have the High Courts or Chief Courts of the provinces any- jurisdiction over them.
