JUDAS MACCABÆUS
Handel was 61 years of age when in 1746 he composed ‘Judas Maccahreus. 1 The oratorio owed its creation to tho victory of William Duke of Cumberland over. Charles Edward the. Pretender on April 16, 1746. The success of tho oratorio was very great; the first performance took place at Covent Garden on April 1, 1747. Tho success was an instantaneous and complete that it was repeated a week later; moreover, it was given, six times during the season. That the subject of the oratorio and. its’ noble music gained the affections of the people is proved by the fact that Handel conducted tho_work thirty-eight times during tho remaining twelve years of bis life. On the thirtieth occasion the receipts amounted to £'3oo. Handel’s autograph scorn is preserved in the Royal Music Library; at Buckingham Palace. The Dunedin Choral Society will give ‘ Judas Maccnbams ’ in His Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday and hndav next.
